Role Value Proposition:

MetLife is seeking a Director, Derivatives, to join the Global Hedging Investments team. The Derivatives trading desk manages and trades a nearly $400 billion notional derivatives portfolio with $300+ billion notional of annual volume.  The desk is responsible for trade idea generation, execution, and general derivatives & hedging advisory activity. 


MetLife currently oversees ~$580 billion[1] in combined managed assets. The Global Hedging team assists the Company in its use of derivatives to solve ALM challenges for its own General Account as well as providing strategic risk management solutions for its third party business.  Reporting directly to the Director for General Account Hedging, who in turn reports to the EVP for Global Derivatives & Liquid Markets, this person will join a team of 7 and be integrally involved with the day-to-day structuring, execution, and management of the derivatives portfolio.  He or she will directly impact the income and value drivers of the Company, providing solutions that help control risks, manage capital, and provide opportunities for return generation.  The successful candidate will monitor markets and manage existing derivative positions to capitalize on market trends and proactively bring new ideas and strategies to our clients.  He or she will work closely with both internal and external clients to initiate efficient and cost-effective hedge solutions and with asset sectors to support new asset generation and projects in our Insurance and 3rd Party asset management operations.  The Director, Derivatives, role is an opportunity for a strategic, analytical, and solutions-oriented leader to join a dynamic, highly collaborative team during a period of broader organizational transformation. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Portfolio Managers & Asset Sectors to develop, recommend, implement, and manage hedging solutions
  • Provide subject matter expertise for derivative topics including markets, regulation, trends, and products to assist in the development of new products, strategies and programs within the firm
  • Communicate and work cross-functionally with diverse teams, including Investments IT, Treasury, Risk Management, ALM, Middle Office, Accounting and Portfolio Management
  • Structure, execute, and manage derivative programs, including review and optimization of existing trades and recommendation of relative value opportunities for both existing and new programs
  • Serve as an expert resource for derivatives solutions to support our 3rd Party investment initiatives


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in derivative products, particularly global rate and volatility derivatives
  • Deep experience with ALM and market risk management
  • Strong analytical and relevant technical skills across the spectrum of derivatives products and valuation metrics
  • Understanding of insurance regulatory and accounting regimes strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with derivative regulation and legal documents (ISDA/ CSAs )
  • Some experience programming a plus (C#, Java or C++).
  • Global market experience a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; MBA or Master’s in Economics or Finance preferred
