This new leadership role reports to the Global Head of MetLife’s Technical Accounting Group (TAG).  TAG has the corporate-wide responsibility (1) to establish, monitor and provide assurance that the accounting policies of MetLife worldwide are in accordance with applicable authoritative guidance, (2) to partner with business unit personnel across all regions and lines of business to ensure timely and accurate implementation, interpretation and administration of these policies and (3) to influence standard setters to ensure prospective changes to accounting principles fully consider the views of MetLife and the insurance industry. 


The Role:

As the Vice President – Insurance Accounting, you will work closely with the Global Head of MetLife’s Technical Accounting Group in a leadership capacity to support strategic initiatives, including accounting standards change and adoption activities (e.g., US GAAP, IFRS, US Statutory Accounting Principles), technical review of insurance accounting matters relevant to current core reporting, and implementation of best practices for operating a global accounting policy function on a day-to-day basis.


Key Responsibilities:

The principle responsibilities of this position include:


  • Working closely with TAG and finance leadership to manage strategic initiatives, influence accounting standards adoption and implement and operationalize ongoing best practices.  Initial key areas of focus will include technical leadership and support of implementation efforts for US GAAP Long-Duration Targeted Improvements and IFRS 17 - Insurance Contracts.
  • In conjunction with the implementation of IFRS 17 and US GAAP Long-Duration Targeted Improvements, specific responsibilities to include:
  • Managing the research, documentation and resolution of insurance technical accounting issues
  • Oversee the Global development of implementation guidance
  • Play a leading role in developing and delivering relevant and timely education sessions to finance and other personnel
  • Coaching and training members of the finance organization to be future thought leaders
  • Increasing skillsets and core competencies of a wide range of finance professionals
  • Managing the research, documentation and resolution of technical accounting issues in conjunction with M&A activities, planning and projections, and US Statutory Accounting Principles.
  • Taking a lead role in drafting comment letters to regulators and accounting standard setters, actively participating in industry working groups involved in interpreting, analyzing and commenting on developments to US GAAP, IFRS, and US STAT insurance accounting standards.
  • Serving as an insurance subject matter specialist in advising and assisting TAG segment and line of business leaders in researching, documenting, and resolving insurance technical accounting matters

  • Key Stakeholders: Chief Accounting Officer, SVP External Reporting and Technical Accounting, SEC reporting, Global Technology and Operations, M&A, Tax, Finance Operations


Candidate Qualifications:


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams through periods of change, analysis of complex accounting and issues and transactions and drive implementation of global best practices and procedures
  • Strong presentation skills – ability to explain and summarize complex concepts in accurate and practical terms, describe economic impacts, alternative accounting treatments and associated cost / benefits to senior stakeholders
  • Ability to work across global organization to lead and guide end to end management of accounting and reporting matters, including strong documentation and review of accounting alternatives and decisions
  • At least 10-15 years of experience within an accounting policy function or similar group.
  • Broad and deep insurance technical accounting and financial reporting experience, including experience across global insurance industry practices, as well as SEC, US GAAP, US Statutory, and IFRS requirements
  • CPA license required to be maintained, Undergraduate degree required, MBA or other advanced degree preferred
