The U.S. Business Communications team is part of Global Communications in the company’s Corporate Affairs function and manages internal and external communications for the U.S Business. Our role is to show how we bring our purpose to life in the U.S,. Business through storytelling that reveals who we are, what we do and the impact we have in the world. Role Value Proposition

As a Lead Communications Specialist for the Group Benefits business, you will play a critical role in the furthering of MetLife’s strategic transformation. Not only will you oversee high-profile communication initiatives, you will also serve as strategic counsel for your partners in matters such as employee engagement, enterprise communications programs, org changes, and MetLife’s ongoing culture journey.

 

Using a robust mix of both traditional and newly developed messaging channels, you will own the conceptualization, planning, and execution of high-impact communication activities. Your ability to closely coordinate with colleagues across the line of business will enable you to craft holistic and actionable messages that will motivate and inspire associates.

This role requires being a creative storyteller above all else, with a knack for uncovering compelling stories where others may not. We’re looking for someone who is adept at understanding how to craft messages that drive action and engagement. This person will have a talent for interpreting what he/she hears from senior business leaders to develop, manage and execute integrated communication strategies that are fresh, interactive and engaging.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Is a dedicated partner to Group Benefits executive leadership and their respective teams, with ownership of communication activities that directly impact business results.
  • Provide day-to-day communications in support, including email development and distribution, presentation development for internal events, key messages, multimedia creation, town hall presentations and speaker notes, and stylized content developed for quarterly newsletters, Yammer feeds and internal collaboration sites.
  • Partner with multiple Chiefs of Staff across the business to align on messaging and communications plans that engage associates.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with business leaders, colleagues and peers, and represent Communication on cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrate a data-driven mindset, with accountability for setting, measuring, and achieving performance metrics in order to maximize audience engagement and deliver on business objectives.
  • Interact with senior leaders to offer counsel, present ideas and engage in thoughtful dialogue on the best approach to communications challenges.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key internal partners including Legal, Finance, Operations, Marketing, IT, and Risk to ensure communication activities are conceptualized and executed with all cross-functional dependencies in mind.

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills

 

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience in communications
  • 8+ years of experience working with senior level executives in a highly matrixed environment.
  • A skilled writer, adept at writing both short and long form pieces and adopting the tone of voice and style of multiple leaders
  • Team player able to collaborate with peers across business functions
  • Experience working in fluid situations, exhibiting high organizational and emotional intelligence, and demonstrating the agility needed to thrive in fast-paced environments.
  • Exercises sound judgment as a communications professional
  • Experienced managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven track record of success in executing internal communications programs.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts and make them relevant to multiple audiences.
  • High energy and strong work ethic.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to take initiative, share perspectives, and proactively make things happen. 

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field is highly preferred.
  • While formal supervisory experience is not required, should demonstrate leadership competencies that drive collaboration and shared success across complex organizational hierarchies.
  • Agency experience a plus.
