Role Value Proposition: 


As part of the Global Legal/Regulatory Coordination team of lawyers, the attorney works on a wide variety of legal and regulatory matters affecting MetLife as a global financial services company.  The attorney’s primary responsibility will be to help develop and execute legal strategy to address evolving regulatory requirements related international privacy and information sharing.  This attorney works with business partners throughout MetLife, especially in Global Tech and Operations, as well as other MetLife attorneys and compliance professionals around the globe.  



Key Responsibilities:


Identifying and resolving legal issues through research, analysis, creativity and teamwork; developing deep expertise in the privacy issues of a region especially as they interplay with MetLife’s operations in that region;  crafting solutions that contribute to global business goals while ensuring appropriate management of legal risks;  functioning well as part of a team of attorneys delivering these services;.  work effectively with attorneys of various disciplines and compliance professionals on matters that involve issues calling for their expertise.


The occupant of this position will:


  • Serve as part of a team of attorneys providing legal services for cross-border privacy matters across the enterprise.
  • Develop and ensure consistent positions on privacy issues on enterprise matters.
  • Identify privacy risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate with US counsel on multi-jurisdictional initiatives.
  • Create frameworks and repositories for regional expertise to be established practice group lawyers.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the law and identify trends in the regions and countries where MetLife has business.
  • Develop legal processes and approval protocols where appropriate for data privacy in support of enterprise strategy and initiatives. 
  • Provide legal advice to Compliance, including the Data Privacy Office, in its development and monitoring of compliance with corporate policies and procedures regarding data privacy.
  • Engage in the onboarding and roll-out of new technologies across the enterprise as well as reviewing modifications to existing technologies to ensure technologies are used within the bounds of data privacy laws globally. 
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to business units in all areas and activities relating to data privacy laws globally. 
  • Promote active knowledge sharing of data privacy legal advice and issues across privacy professionals throughout the enterprise.
  • Partner with Compliance to develop education programs to heighten awareness within the enterprise of the impact of global data privacy laws on the use of global technologies.
  • Work with, guide, and manage outside counsel for MetLife on matters, to the extent they are engaged on those matters.
  • Keep business partners and colleagues apprised of relevant issues, developments and preventative law measures in privacy.
  • Communicate frequently with Law Department management on issues and progress of matters in order to maintain effectiveness and to coordinate with those working on other matters.
  • Demonstrate skills as a creative problem-solver, self-starter and hard worker, with the desire to grow with the position. 
  • Demonstrate strong service orientation and collaboration skills.
  • Exhibit detail-orientation, with very good organizational skills and experience in advising business partners.
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the role, or as required or necessary.



Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:



  • 3-5 years transactional and/or regulatory experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department, reflecting a record of accomplishment.  Insurance and/or other financial services industry experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of international privacy and personal information protections laws/regulations strongly preferred.
  • Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school. 
  • NYS (or other appropriate) bar admission required.
  • Excellent academic credentials.
  • Exhibits good business acumen and familiarity with the market and regulatory landscape affecting global financial services companies.
  • Influence and leadership skills, especially in the context of the ability to relate to different stakeholders, business partners and colleagues. 
  • Strong drafting, negotiating and analytical skills.
  • Crisp, clear client communication skills; in particular, the ability to reduce legal issues to straightforward practical analysis and advice delivered in a “human voice.”
  • Balances competing demands, multiple deadline-sensitive matters, assessing business priorities.
  • Follows through to ensure advice is acted upon, and that ethical, legal and business issues are raised to appropriate levels.
  • Builds collaborative partnerships and alliances, internally and externally.
  • Enjoys challenging assignments; willing to become familiar with new areas of the law.
  • Willingness to receive coaching and mentoring from management and/or more experienced team members.
  • Willingness to build knowledge of the company’s structure, operations, products and services, strategic business values, objectives, policies, culture, and regulatory requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to improve operations, implement effective policies and procedures.  



    Some domestic and international travel is required.  If selected candidate is EMEA-based, would consider locating position in a MetLife EMEA office.  Relocation assistance will be considered.
