The Role:


Through its Digital Office, MetLife is focused on accelerating growth and driving value through a laser focus on customers, world-class capabilities, and a holistic transformation of the insurance industry. The Digital Office is leveraging innovation, process automation, distribution and data analytics to deliver global Digital strategies that will disrupt the industry and transform the customer experience.


The AVP, Digital Strategy Communications Leader, is a seasoned communicator and global business partner who provides strategic communications counsel and support to the Chief Digital Officer and the Digital Office, part of the company’s Global Technology & Operations (GTO) function. This role will report to the Vice President and head of Global Employee Communication. The AVP also has dotted line responsibilities to the Chief Communications Officer as well as the VP, GTO lead communications business partner. The AVP will be a member of the Chief Digital Office leadership team.


The Digital Strategy Communications Leader is a confident communicator with significant experience in leading communications relative to a company’s digital transformation, and a proven ability to understand digital trends and use these insights to shape communication strategy. This leader is a team player, who collaborates with colleagues and leaders and effectively uses media and communication channels to reach target audiences. This person is experienced in using digital technology to create innovative communication approaches


Key Responsibilities:


  • Partner with the Chief Digital Officer to craft a compelling articulation of the digital transformation vision that engages stakeholders and repositions MetLife as a digital leader;
  • Create strategic positioning for MetLife’s Digital transformation, including the development and execution of internal and external communications strategy;
  • Provide communications business partner support for the Digital Office and Chief Digital Officer, including internal activities, media requests, and speaking engagement opportunities in support of the digital strategic agenda;
  • Develop a strategy to use curated storytelling to build greater awareness with internal and external stakeholders of MetLife’s digital capabilities and progress;
  • Collaborate with the VP, GTO lead communications business partner, to ensure alignment in messaging for various digital initiatives within Global Technology & Operations and across MetLife’s business units; and
  • Develop a strategy for new external digital capabilities for the Global Communications function, consulting with the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) to create and curate a digital newsroom and launch a media-focused Twitter handle.
  • Develop and execute the communications strategy for Digital across multiple internal channels using a variety of mediums and approaches to build engagement.
  • Develop and propose new ideas for how the Chief Digital Officer and other senior leaders can communicate with and engage employees on MetLife’s digital strategy.
  • Identify industry and market trends to understand key perceptions, motivations and drivers related to digital strategy and innovation – seek out opportunities to reposition MetLife as digital leader in non-insurance forums.
  • Create an integrated PR platform to harness executive voices and amplify our digital story through editorial, earned media, and thought leadership. Leverage relationships with media and industry figures in support of our digital agenda.
  • Develop and execute a strategy to launch new digital communication capabilities that enhance the Global Communications function, consulting with the CCO.
  • Collaborate closely with the VP, GTO lead communications business partner, on digital initiatives in our Global Operations and Global Customer Solutions teams to ensure alignment of messaging.
  • Brainstorm, pitch, write, produce, and distribute stories both internally and externally. 
  • Engage and direct global and regional leaders so they play an active role in communicating our digital priorities and progress.
  • Work effectively with shared processes and a commitment to operational excellence.

Candidate Qualifications:


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • 10-15+ years of relevant business and corporate communications experience, including production of written and multimedia content
  • Bachelor's degree in PR, communications, marketing, or related discipline preferred
  • Proven experience in developing strategic positioning and communications strategy for digital leaders and digital initiatives, including supporting digital transformation within a company
  • Proven experience in developing and/or managing digital-related communication tools including the management of online newsrooms and PR social media strategy
  • Superior project management skills and attention to detail
  • Experience supporting senior executives and in executive communication
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex information internally and externally
  • Self-starter with an ability to handle a variety of responsibilities by taking initiative
  • Proven relationship management skills
  • Proven PR and social media skills
  • Must have the ability to understand cultural nuances
  • Must be a reliable and flexible team player with a friendly and professional attitude
  • Ability to lead and motivate project team members who are not direct reports
  • Able to balance strategic and tactical work by developing strategy and also executing against it effectively
