Corporate Ethics and Compliance (“CEC”) delivers a compliance risk framework that enables the businesses and functions to comply with applicable internal and external rules and regulations and maintain risk levels within MetLife’s risk appetite. CEC provides constructive challenge to the businesses and functions, partnering closely with them to implement strong processes and effective controls, as well as to foster and embed a culture of compliance. CEC is part of Global Risk Management (GRM) and maintains a matrixed reporting line to Legal Affairs.


Within CEC, the Employee Compliance team has the responsibility for the execution and oversight of MetLife’s global employee compliance program which drives adherence to the firm’s standards for conduct, conflicts of interest management and ethical decision-making.  The Director, Employee Compliance is responsible for the effective design, implementation, and maintenance of the global Employee Compliance programs.


In line with a three lines of defense risk management philosophy, the Director will establish roles and responsibilities related to employee supervision, including timely completion of required training, and holding staff accountable for improper conduct. In addition, the Director will partner with Subject Matter Experts across Legal, HR, Corporate Communications, and Compliance to develop and deliver mandatory global compliance trainings (which includes maintenance and training related to the Code of Business Ethics and the Conflicts of Interest Disclosure program).


This person will serve as a thought leader capable of driving change and having enterprise-wide impact. The role requires a proactive and strategic thinker who has a collaborative mindset and influencing capabilities. This role will provide advice and guidance to the Business and local Compliance officers across the globe.  This is an opportunity to contribute to the transformation of compliance risk management at MetLife.     

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Lead the development, enhancement, and maintenance of MetLife’s employee compliance programs including ongoing maintenance of and training related to the Code of Business Ethics, enhancing the conflicts of interest disclosure program and establishing a conduct risk program.
  • Serve as a thought leader on identifying and managing emerging employee compliance risks.
  • Drive and own transformation initiatives to advance the effectiveness and sophistication of the employee compliance program.
  • Identify potential compliance gaps; develop and oversee implementation of remediation strategies.
  • Stay informed on the demands of a rapidly changing business and regulatory environment by anticipating problems, offering appropriate and creative solutions, and providing the leadership necessary to effectively manage current and emerging employee compliance risks.
  • Champion a culture of compliance, speaking up, and integrity at all levels of the organization through an effective training and communications strategy which builds upon MetLife’s core values.
  • Ensure that the MetLife Code of Business Ethics continues to be a dynamic document that reflects best practices, changing attitudes and concerns both within the business world and the population at large.
  • Create and implement models, tools, and processes to prepare people managers for ethical decision-making dilemmas.
  • Develop and implement periodic organizational culture surveys, reviews, and assessments.
  • Deliver consistent enterprise and targeted compliance training and communications reinforce code of business ethics, escalation, conflicts of interest and compliance policy requirements.
  • Utilize technology to support an optimal and impactful employee experience in relation to compliance and ethics related training, communication, and awareness.
  • As a people manager, champion and contribute to a high-performance environment by attracting, coaching, and developing top talent.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive team culture that embraces change and succeeds through both collaboration and individual accountability.   

Key Relationships:

  • Reports to: VP & Head of Employee Compliance, Compliance Governance & Emerging Risk
  • Direct reports/team: 2 to 3 direct reports
  • Key Stakeholders: Compliance, Risk, Audit, Legal, Employee Relations, Corporate Affairs, and the Business

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience
  • 10+ years or relevant experience in Compliance Risk Management and/or Ethics, preferably with a medium to large financial services firm  
  • Experience in reviewing and enhancing compliance programs to reflect business and regulatory expectations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to digest, summarize and present content quickly and clearly to senior leadership
  • Detail oriented and the ability to identify and resolve issues
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively across Compliance and other business lines and enterprise functions
  • Be proactive and influential to deal with rapid changes, and capable of handling multiple and competing priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to build rapport with key risk partners and interface with the business and corporate functions in order to facilitate the successful implementation of employee compliance programs globally
  • Imagination and creativity to address emerging trends and issues quickly and effectively
  • Experience designing and implementing conduct risk and/or conflicts of interest management frameworks preferred.
