The Role:

This position is primarily responsible for providing strategic leadership in supporting business growth objectives in the Asia region, excluding Japan, by promoting professional and ethical standards and establishing a compliance culture across operations.  Working with the Regional Business and International Ethics & Compliance leadership, this position develops short and long term goals for the Asia ex-Japan region and leads the strategic initiatives to reach these goals.  The position will also be responsible for overseeing the implementation, support and enhancement of Ethics & Compliance programs and initiatives in each country by providing the necessary coaching, training and direction needed for the country compliance teams to achieve objectives.  Position requirements may change frequently as organizational and business needs change.  As such, the position requires an ability to deal with ambiguity and change, ability to provide strategic leadership as well as tactical support/direction as needed, and an ability to work well within a complex matrix organization.


This position will be based in Asia and will require international travel. The incumbent will have direct interaction with associates and business clients in other regions and time zones, therefore hours of work at times may be non-traditional.


Key Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the business, responsible for leading and instilling corporate vision, developing and executing on strategy that positions MetLife’s Ethics & Compliance (E&C) practices and company reputation as a competitive edge in the market.
  • Direct a disciplined compliance risk management program, including the inventory of laws and regulations, compliance risks, controls, risk assessments, monitoring and testing plans, and test results.
  • Supervise a staff of 80 professionals in 9 countries.
  • Study trends, monitor industry practices/developments, new regulations, and emerging risks, and advise leadership/provide guidance on ways to leverage those opportunities to drive business growth while upholding company reputation, ensuring compliance with laws & regulations, and treating customers fairly. 
  • Direct and provide general oversight, of ethics and compliance programs in MetLife’s Asia ex-Japan operations, including policies and procedures, controls, training, communications, and corrective action relating to all insurance laws and regulations as well as other applicable laws and regulations including money laundering and corruption. 
  • Ensure regional/country compliance organization is well designed, staffed, and developed to achieve company goals as well as to quickly adapt to changing market/business needs
  • Ensure compliance with local sales practices regulations, as well as driving improvements in both the business controls and compliance monitoring in these areas.  Direct and provide general oversight in the Asia ex-Japan region to ensure the following:


  • Hiring process includes an appropriate focus on the honesty and integrity of the new hires;
  • Proper compliance training takes place in all areas of the company, with a special focus on the   distribution arm;
  • Products are designed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and with MetLife standards;
  • Sales/marketing materials are in compliance with all laws, regulations and company policies;
  • Sales meet company requirements for suitability and are properly documented;
  • Customer complaints are properly handled and are reviewed to identify significant compliance issues and that such issues are properly addressed/corrected;
  • Customer contracts are issued and administered in a timely fashion and in accordance with all laws, regulations and company policies;
  • Changes in laws or regulations are appropriately reflected in changes to policies and procedures and properly communicated to personnel;
  • Appropriate discipline takes place and is properly documented for infractions of laws, regulations, and company policies;
  • Effective Compliance Risk Management Program; and
  • Effective compliance review program for sales distribution offices/channels.

  • Reports to: SVP Compliance, Asia / EMEA / LatAm
  • Direct reports/team: 80 professionals in 9 countries
  • Key Stakeholders: Regional Business and International Ethics & Compliance leadership


Candidate Qualifications:

  • At least ten years’ experience leading compliance or audit teams at major multinational firms;
  • JD degree from an accredited law school along with strong academic record
  • Strong understanding and application of risk management;
  • Strong understanding and application of corporate governance principles;
  • Ability to influence partners, find ways to harness diverse views in effectively achieving strategic goals;
  • Creative, innovative, and practical problem solving;
  • Excellent ability to coach, develop, and mentor compliance teams of different backgrounds and cultures;
  • Strong analytic capabilities with ability to identify key barriers and core problems, and apply problem solving skills to deal creatively with difficult situations;
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral, and presentation) and the ability to prioritize and simultaneously manage multiple projects;
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills required including the ability to work effectively, develop trusting relationships, and be able to influence others beyond direct control, across  organizational levels, countries, and cultures;
  • Ability to work and adapt in changing environment;
  • A broad business acumen with strong emphasis on motivational leadership and communication; and
  • Ability to travel internationally approximately 50% of the time.
