Head of Investments Sustainability

The Head of Investments Sustainability will lead efforts to develop and execute a unified and comprehensive sustainability strategy.  This includes driving overall strategy and implantation related to research, analytics, product development, and integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into the investment process. She/he will oversee a team of experienced professionals who will work in partnership across the MIM organization to support the planning and implementation of all initiatives related to investments sustainability , including stewardship engagement with issuers, communication and thought leadership to internal and external stakeholders,  and coordination within MetLife’s Sustainability group. She/he will work in close partnership to set and drive our sustainability-related client solutions and product agenda. This role will actively participate in industry ESG organizations and advance ideas and programs which can be implemented to keep MIM at the leading edge of ESG best practices.


Strategy Development & Framework Development

  • Provide thought and influence leadership across the organization, creating guidelines, policies, and processes to advance our ESG strategy
  • Create, develop, evolve, and oversee implementation of MIM’s ESG integration policy  
  • Deepen MIM stakeholder knowledge of ESG-related trends, policies, and regulations relevant to investment management
  • Play a critical role in representing MIM’s ESG-related capabilities and product offerings with clients, prospects, and other external stakeholders; develop ESG commercialization initiatives in partnership with the Institutional Client Group
  • Build effective working relationships with investment, sales, and product teams and leaders to support ESG policy implementation on behalf of our clients
  • Lead the development of an  data and analytics strategy, including the assessment of vendor offerings and consulting services in the areas of ESG ratings, data, regulatory disclosure,  and models
  • Work with sector leaders and portfolio management to review existing ESG efforts within the context of a collective framework;  develop and monitor ESG evaluation metrics and standards for new and existing investments
  • Partner with MetLife Corporate Sustainability and Government Relations to ensure visibility and coordination between ESG initiatives within MIM and the broader enterprise


Governance & Cross-Platform Integration

  • Chair ESG Integration Council
  • Oversee investment team stewardship activity, ensuring compliance with integration policy and various third-party requirements and regulations
  • Set targets and measure progress towards sustainability-related KPIs and other ESG related goals 
  • Coordinate with global product and functional teams (e.g. Enterprise Sustainability, MetLife Communications, Government Relations) on planning and execution of key sustainability initiatives
  • Identify and promote ways to increase cross-enterprise collaboration between MIM, the AIC and MetLife Regional benefits, retirement, and insurance business lines to support and advance ESG initiatives
  • Partner with Portfolio and Risk Analytics to develop appropriate risk assessment techniques regarding ESG issues, particularly with respect to climate risk
  • Internal and External Communication
  • Represent MIM’s ESG and sustainability strategy and actions both as a thought leader at conferences and industry events as well as an advisor on tailored content and solutions for specific clients or prospects in collaboration with investments, the client group, and marketing
  • Work with functional partners in Communications, Corporate Affairs, Global Brand & Marketing, HR, the MetLife Foundation, et al to develop content and communication strategy, including identifying and ensuring appropriate MIM engagement in industry surveys, thought pieces, investor relations, reporting, including the Annual Sustainability Report, and other media 
  • Educate investment, business development, and client-facing teams on ESG and sustainability-related industry developments and best practices

Candidate Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience, including at least 5 years in in a leadership role with a focus on sustainable investments and/or ESG strategy development (either in research, portfolio management, or business development) in a top global investment firm 
  • Deep knowledge of institutional asset management environment, trends, competitive intelligence, investor and consultant landscape, etc. strongly preferred; knowledge of public fixed income, private capital, infrastructure, real estate, and/or agricultural investments ideal
  • Subject matter expertise in global ESG reporting standards, e.g. ICMA Green and Social Bond Principles, UN Sustainable Development Goals, IRIS, UN Principles for Responsible Investing, and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board
  • Strong data and metrics orientation required to build out ESG reporting and analytics capabilities; relevant platforms include, Blackrock Aladdin, MSCI, Morningstar, etc.
  • Inclusive people leader committed to building teams, developing talent, and driving engagement
  • Thought leader able to anticipate, identify and advise on action related to key sustainability trends 
  • Experience working across a global, multi-region platform within a complex, matrixed organization
  • Executive level communication skills; credibility and influence leadership across business units and functions needed to drive initiatives and achieve deliverables without direct oversight
  • Proven cross-functional project and resource management capabilities
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills; comfortable participating on panel discussions, press interviews, sales calls, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, CFA, or equivalent preferred
