Role Value Proposition: 

The Business Planning and Development (BPD) team is responsible for the development and implementation of MetLife Investment Management’s (MIM’s) business plan and growth objectives. It provides product platform oversight; strategic leadership for M&A and post-acquisition operating models; and enhanced frameworks for business partnership cultivation. BPD also serves as a critical connector for MIM’s business groups to ensure their alignment with business priorities. The team reports directly to MIM’s President and CEO.


Role Overview:

The individual will work within a close-knit team and across MIM to support the development and implementation of MIM’s business strategy. Responsibilities include conducting extensive asset management industry research, assisting with business planning, providing support for acquisitions, and analyzing MIM’s financial performance. The Associate Director will also help lead strategic business initiatives that ensure goal alignment across key stakeholders globally.


Key Responsibilities:  

  1. Business Strategy and Planning
    • Develop a detailed understanding of industry best practices and MIM’s current-state processes. Help identify and recommend opportunities for improvement.
    • Maintain expert knowledge of the asset management landscape. Conduct industry research to track industry growth trends and analyze MIM’s competitive positioning. Partner with external consultants to stay current on best practices. Maintain relevant databases with supporting material.
    • Partner with teams across MIM to help implement key initiatives and address day-to-day issues. Track and meet key deliverables / milestones and deadlines.
    • Utilize data provided by CFO to measure business and team financial impact.
    • Develop and present business cases to senior management for review and approval.
  2. M&A and Post-Acquisition Operating Model
    • Evaluate and summarize M&A prospect information and help design and implement MIM’s post-acquisition operating model.
    • Work with senior management and MetLife’s Corporate M&A team to monitor deal activity in the asset management sector and evaluate new acquisition opportunities.
    • Help develop and maintain an investment opportunities pipeline; track potential targets and analyze their key attributes, including business models and overall fit with MIM.
    • Help execute all acquisition processes from initial sourcing through post-closing integration.
  3. Business Partnerships
    • Partner with MIM sales and other MetLife lines of business to assist with the strategic deployment of MIM products where appropriate.
    • Analyze MIM’s competitive readiness for inclusion on MetLife’s insurance product platforms. Identify opportunities for expansion that align with MetLife’s global footprint.
    • Partner with and identify key external strategic partnerships that provide the prospect for potential growth initiatives. Oversee implementation of these initiatives, when appropriate.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • Experience managing multiple complex initiatives within the complete asset management M&A life cycle with a deep understanding of financial analysis (valuation modeling, data analysis and visualization methods) and business strategy, with the ability to support business integration analysis.
  • Ability to exercise superior reasoning skills and sound business judgment to gain buy-in from key stakeholders, influence decision making and effectively interface with executive management; ability to develop credibility and the respect of individuals at all organization levels.
  • Excellent analytical / conceptual problem-solving skills with ability to develop actionable recommendations.
  • Strong work ethic (takes ownership), self-starter and quick-study mentality; ability to work in a dynamic and fluid environment while leading and inspiring cross functional teams.  



  • An advanced degree with excellent academic records in finance, mathematics, statistics, or similar field requiring significant quantitative analysis.  
  • CFA designation or CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience specifically within asset management (e.g. consulting, internal strategy, or investment banking with asset management focus) with demonstrated development through work experience.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills, including ability to present recommendations and highlight key points to executive management.
