The Associate Director, Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities is responsible for assisting in managing the credit quality and performance of MIM’s $13B CMBS assets under management. CMBS is a key component of our income-based, short-term, and core-based strategies and a source of performance differentiation for the strategies. The Associate Director, Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities, is part of the Structured Products Research senior team, and as such contributes to the development and implementation of our broader cross-sector credit strategy. This role works in partnership with the Structured Products Trading team and with our Portfolio Managers in identifying value-added investment opportunities for our various strategies.

 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct credit, structural, and legal analysis on new issue CMBS transactions or secondary market opportunities.
  • Make investment recommendations and assist in creating unique structures for customized client solutions.
  • Analyze broad industry trends in Commercial Real Estate and CMBS.
  • Perform monthly surveillance on the CMBS portfolio and make investment recommendations based on the analysis.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with key CMBS constituents to stay abreast of underwriting, structural, and other market developments
  • Work with research analysts at broker-dealers and rating agencies to understand market views on industry, issuer, or bond trends.
  • Collaborate with trading, portfolio management, and other credit analysts in all aspects of managing the CMBS portfolio, such as management reports, client presentations, relative value discussions etc.

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required: 

  • 5+ years of direct experience in commercial real estate and CMBS loan underwriting and investment analysis, preferably in buy-side roles.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter, with ability to constantly show initiative, be detail oriented, and work under tight deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in tools such Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Trepp.

 

Preferred:

  • MBA (or equivalent) and/or CFA preferred.
  • Preferred working knowledge of Bloomberg and BlackRock/ Aladdin.
