The Real Estate & Agricultural Finance team within MIM maintains a portfolio invested in commercial real estate and agricultural mortgages, as well as real estate equities. Agricultural investments under management totaled $22.2 billion as of 12/31/2020. 

 

The Associate, Agricultural Research & Strategy role will be a high profile and integrated position supporting an agricultural mortgage portfolio owned by MetLife’s general account and other institutional investors. The Associate will support the Head of Agricultural Research & Strategy and the Associate Director, Agricultural Research & Strategy in developing and communicating the house view on agricultural, timber, and debt capital markets to senior management and MIM clients. The Associate will contribute to production of tools and analyses in support of effective and efficient origination and management of agricultural mortgage investments.  The Associate will also assist in high profile special projects related to portfolio management and strategy and will coauthor quarterly research publications.  The portfolios directly influenced by this role currently total $22.2 Billion in assets under management, with annual transaction activity of over $4 Billion. Around 100 associates in the Agricultural Finance business regularly leverage the guidance produced by this function in the origination and management of agricultural investments. 

 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Analysis of agricultural mortgage portfolio to ensure portfolio management objectives of mitigating risk and maximizing returns are met
  • Support formulation of actionable investment strategies for the agricultural portfolio and communicate these strategies to senior management
  • Produce studies on agricultural trends that can be distributed to borrowers, potential clients, and the media, in an effort to position MIM’s agricultural research as industry-leading
  • Assist in process of updating market benchmarks and internal portfolio guidelines
  • Produce specific market research reports to support underwriting of agricultural mortgage loans
  • Develop market views via data collection and market analysis by key sectors of interest, ranging from production agriculture to agribusiness and the timberland investment space
  • Assist in special projects in conjunction with Regional Operations and the Agricultural Strategies Group
  • Update periodic market research reports produced for the regional offices and management
  • Develop/maintain relationships with key Agricultural and Agricultural Finance data vendors/agencies
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret economic/market data relevant to the agricultural sector

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in agricultural investment industry preferable
  • Candidate should have excellent analytical, project management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with all levels of management
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in fast-paced work environment
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel 

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, agricultural finance or related fields preferable
  • Experience with econometrics and statistical programming tools such as SAS, R or STATA is strongly preferred
