Department: Global Government Relations (GGR) works with business lines and enterprise functions on MetLife’s engagement in public policy matters at various levels of government in the U.S. and across the globe. Through these collaborative partnerships, we are able to formulate the best advocacy strategy to meet the needs of the company and its stakeholders. In addition to leveraging our relationships with government officials, our advocacy strategies draw upon internal resources, such as Global Communications and Global Sustainability. We also leverage external resources, including industry associations, coalitions, think tanks, and the media. These efforts ensure that we are well-positioned to influence outcomes and achieve desired results.

 

The Role:

The AVP will play a lead role within Global Government Relations (GGR) in developing and executing MetLife advocacy efforts across the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) issue set. The ESG issue set is one that is rapidly developing, for which MetLife has identified enterprise-wide goals, and against which MetLife’s stakeholders are actively assessing MetLife’s results. The legal and regulatory environment is emerging, with policy formation among stakeholder groups at the global, multilateral, national, and state levels. The incumbent will convene internal stakeholders at enterprise and business levels to develop MetLife positioning and responses to legislative and regulatory proposals and engage across the stakeholder set to advance MetLife’s interests.  The incumbent will serve as a resource for GGR colleagues on ESG matters and support local engagement on these topics in MetLife markets. They AVP will promote a collaborative work environment with colleagues across MetLife’s global Government Relations team, and with other internal stakeholders, helping them to leverage each other’s strengths and build and maintain a strong network of relationships with policymakers, domestically and globally. Given the current global policy landscape, the climate sustainability issue set is expected to require the most attention in the near-term.

    

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of effective advocacy strategies for key business priorities related to ESG issues impacting the insurance and/or financial services sector.
  • Coordinate advocacy efforts effectively with Government Relations peers in a high-performing, collaborative team environment.
  • Deliver timely communications to internal stakeholders regarding regulatory/legislative/policy developments that could impact the business to ensure an opportunity to influence outcomes.
  • Establish trusted relationships with key business partners across the company to inform U.S. advocacy priorities. Key internal stakeholders beyond the Government Relations team include leaders in the following areas: Sustainability Office, Risk Department, Finance Department, Law Department, and the CEO and executive leadership team, including the Climate Advisory Council.
  • Build a strong network of support among key external stakeholders to enhance advocacy efforts, including at trade associations and at government agencies in the United States and beyond.

  • Key Stakeholders: Sustainability Office, Risk, Finance, Legal, DEI office, global standard setting bodies, trade associations

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • A minimum of eight to ten years of relevant government affairs experience; demonstrated ability to operate within a global environment and demonstrate international cultural agility. 
  • A strong understanding of regulatory processes and experience with policy and legislative activities specific to the insurance and/or financial services sector, particularly as it relates to ESG issues. Within the ESG set, experience with climate-related policy is prioritized, encompassing both prudential and market disclosure policy.
  • An understanding of the standards and policy development process, encompassing international, multilateral, and domestic policymakers in the insurance/financial service sectors and ESG landscape.
  • Proven relationship and coalition building skills. A team player with a proactive approach to people and issues management. Must partner with others across the organization with candor and transparency.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, executive presence, capacity for learning and articulating new and existing concepts, ability to think strategically, organizational capabilities, flexibility working within and across teams, effective problem-solving and conflict resolution, independent decision-making, and customer-centricity.
  • Ability to deliver timely, executive-caliber written and verbal communication to the Office of the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and other senior business partners across the enterprise.
  • Highly self-motivated work ethic; demonstrating sound judgment, trustworthiness, initiative, and an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Experience as a senior government relations specialist with a global company is preferred. Congressional, agency and/or executive branch experience is also highly valued.
