Role Value Proposition: The environment within which MetLife operates is a highly regulated one and is significantly affected by legislative developments.  On an everyday basis, product features, taxes, investment permissibility, employment rules, among other things, impact MetLife’s earnings. The AVP for Federal Government Relation will influence positive legislative outcomes to drive the bottom line success of the company. The incumbent will also work to ensure that federal legislative changes minimize any negative effects to the company and don’t put MetLife at a competitive disadvantage.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Engage in lobbying activities on issues pending before Congress.
  • Coordinate with business partners to identify legislative priorities for on assigned issues  Provide guidance on the formulation of company positions, on policy direction, and on strategies for advocacy.  This will entail building relationships with senior management and keeping interested parties within MetLife informed about ongoing developments on priority issues.
  • Provide written reports related to advocacy activities, including: position papers; internal Washington updates for senior executives; memoranda in preparation for senior executive meetings with U.S. government officials and participation at trade association meetings; and regulatory and legislative analysis of priority policy issues.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with government officials, industry leaders, trade associations, think tanks, academics, and other opinion leaders in furtherance of company goals. The incumbent will meet regularly with members of Congress and their staffs, representatives of national trade and industry associations andthink tanksas needed to develop the relationships necessary to ensure that MetLife’s interests and concerns regarding legislation and policy are understood and heard. 
  • Coordinate and effectively utilize  internal and external resources,including outside counsel, national trade associations, and think tanks , and build coalitionsto advance MetLife’s strategic advocacy goals
  • Provide strategic advice on federal political matters to Government Relations and company leadership, including recommendations regarding MetLife’s federal political action committee and grassroots programs.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • 8 or more years of U.S. federal government relations and/or congressional or federal agency experience required
  • Life insurance / financial services experience is preferred, but not required
  • Proven success in legislative/regulatory advocacy
  • Ability to effectively interact with business partners to build consensus  
  • Exceptional analytical ability and oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects effectively
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented approach to projects
