In this role you will execute Underwriting actions & activities across all products and multiple states.


The primary focus of an Underwriter is individual risk selection and accurate premium development. The successful underwriter will understand, administer and adhere to underwriting guidelines, procedures and compliance requirements in their daily work. In addition to risk selection the Underwriter will demonstrate the skills necessary to deliver an excellent customer experience through daily interactions with customers. Based on knowledge level and need the Underwriter may be used as a subject matter expert on projects.


Key Responsibilities:  

  • Exercises independent, sound and reasoned financial underwriting judgment based on file documentation.
  • Administers, monitors, and communicated underwriting guidelines and philosophies.
  • Manages assigned market to meet business plan objectives.
  • Analyzes the quality of assigned market and identified unprofitable trends as well as growth opportunities and communicated results of analysis to impacted business partners.
  • Prepares regular reports identifying key drivers; Develops, recommends, implements and monitors effective action plans for improvement.
  • Provides timely and appropriate service to external and internal customers.
  • Provides remote and sometimes off-site training and support to agents.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • 1-3 years of underwriting experience or related insurance industry experience (claims, product, or marketing).
  • Strong working knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures, underwriting guidelines and philosophies.  Demonstrated strong analytical skills, strong written and oral communication skills.
  • A willingness to take risk with appropriate levels of risk assessment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • High level of organization skill and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Strong Excel and personal computer skills.



  • General knowledge of the Property and Casualty industry, products and contracts.
  • BS degree.
