The Role: The VP, Chief Architect will lead a program to develop, maintain and leverage the Enterprise Architecture (EA) across the Asia Region. The role is responsible for enforcing the EA processes, such as the EA governance process and for leading the integration of these processes with other related business and IT processes.


To achieve the overall goal, the role will need to meet these objectives:

  • Lead the development of an implementation plan for the EA, based on business requirements and IT strategies; overseeing EA implementation, ongoing EA refinement activities, and the documentation of all EA design and analysis work
  • Identify gaps or deficiencies in the existing portfolio of IT solutions, management information systems and reporting, technology landscape and processes;
  • Facilitate an effective EA function or program, including the coordination of an appropriately balanced pursuit of enterprise business, information, technical and solution architecture viewpoints;
  • Ensure reuse from existing investments and sweating the assets;
  • Simplify the IT landscape by reducing complexity, diversity of solution and establishing consistency of approach within IT. This covers Application and Technical architectures.
  • Lead the identification and analysis of enterprise business drivers to derive enterprise business, information, technical and solution architecture requirements; including analysing industry, technology to determine their potential impacts on the enterprise.
  • Enforce EA governing principles to guide solutions and adherence to reference architectures.
  • Understand, advocate and support the enterprise's business and IT strategies.
  • Identify organizational requirements for the resources, structures and cultural changes necessary to support the enterprise architecture.


The position will require consulting with program/project teams to find solutions which are fit for purpose to meet business objectives by supporting the underlying business capabilities. The person in the role will assist with the prioritization and planning of initiatives in the Asia IT Portfolio in alignment with the IT Strategy and Roadmap. Where a solution is deemed appropriate the role will assist through project initiation, design, and execution through established governance processes.


The Chief Architect will work across all parts of the technology function in the Asia Region, and with counterparts in Regional and Global IT, to transform the way that Asia IT delivers services and capabilities to the business.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Revise and evolve the current EA function or program, including the coordination of an appropriately balanced pursuit of enterprise business, information, technical and solution architecture viewpoints.
  • Review and enforce architecture governance processes to ensure quality IT delivery by implementation teams and subject matter experts.
  • Prioritize key IT Strategic Initiatives to ensure alignment with country Business Goals & Objectives
  • Revise and maintain the Application Portfolio and Business Capabilities that these applications provides to the business.
  • Specific Enterprise Architecture activities include the following:
    Architecture Governance
    • Maintain current architecture governance function through the Asia ARB, and Global ARB.
    • Review and approve architectural deliverables from projects.
    • Highlight risks of projects and continually reassess business value and architectural alignment.
    • Work with existing IT functions across Asia and Global IT functions, to improve existing IT processes and technology to attain value for the business.
    • Act as a point of reference for the MetLife Technology Stack and Technology Standards.
    • Produce reports and assessments on current state versus to-be state of IT through an IT Roadmap.
    • Manage Application Portfolios for the Asia Region countries and ensure currency of information.

IT Budgeting and Strategic Planning Process

  • Work with business strategy and effectiveness departments to align IT technology goals and strategy to business objectives.
  • To review and update the 3 year strategic IT Roadmap of the to-be state of application and technology landscape in supporting the business goals upcoming years.
  • Work closely with planning and delivery departments within Asia IT to inform and guide the IT Portfolio.
  • Align and incorporate Global IT strategic roadmaps and align to Asia IT technology plans accordingly.

Enterprise Architecture Standards and Directions

  • Review and maintain the Architectural Principles and Technology Standards.
  • Review and maintain Reference Architectures for various blueprint solutions.
  • Review and maintain the current IT Roadmap.
  • Review and maintain the current, transition, future state Application and Technical architecture.
  • Set directions for key architectural concerns including but not limited to underwriting rules engines, enterprise single sign-on, business system consolidation, content management systems, and portals.
  • Set directions and incorporate global precedents for setting ‘best in class’ solutions for sales, service, and back office, and other functions.

IT Audit & Compliance

  • Work with the Global and Asia Regional Audit & Compliance teams to review, maintain, and adhere to any IT Audit & Compliance standards.

  • Direct reports/team:  5 Direct reports /15 indirect reports


Candidate Qualifications:

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 15+ Years of technical, solution, and enterprise architecture experience in the insurance or financial services industries
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical major
  • Deep understanding of the financial services business and be able to discuss the business implications of technology decisions, as well as the technology implications of business decisions, particularly in terms of costs and implementation roadmaps
  • Demonstrable specific experience developing the strategic vision for an organization and prioritizing its most critical needs
  • 5+ years of experience with IT Governance in multi-business unit environments (decision rights), and demonstrate strong negotiating skills
  • Demonstrable expertise and implementation experience in Enterprise Architecture frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman and other associated frameworks.
  • Expertise in the use of Enterprise Architecture tools and systems including but not limited to application portfolio management and application / infrastructure modelling.
  • Expertise in managing small to medium size technical teams.
  • Ability to develop strategic relationships with their client groups and vendor partners.
  • Strong leadership skills required to restructure and continually refine organizational goals and direction.
  • Ability to direct multiple teams' activities; ability to direct, motivate and develop project staff in an evolving environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to influence and operate at all levels including CxO and executive management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and preferably Japanese and/or Chinese.
