The Director, Global Sustainability is part of the Global Sustainability function in MetLife Corporate Affairs.  The role is responsible for developing and implementing strategies, initiatives and programs that ensure the company will meet its sustainability-related goals and commitments.

The role will lead successful implementation of key projects, cross-functional teams and coordinate across the organization, communicating with executives, employees, business partners as well as shareholders and customers. The position has direct accountability for the successful implementation of MetLife’s sustainability strategies, associated programs and goals across our company including all departments, and geographies including the company’s operations in 40+ markets around the world.

This position requires a deep understanding of sustainability, ESG, and non-financial reporting; experience managing, leading, implementing corporate sustainability initiatives and efforts; communicating company efforts, priorities and initiatives to key stakeholders; and raising MetLife’s profile on sustainability topics.

This role will work across the organization to drive new opportunities for sustainability. The person is expected to communicate effectively with leaders at all levels, across all departments, and ultimately deliver value across our global organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive implementation of MetLife’s sustainability strategy, key programs, stakeholder engagement, metrics reporting and disclosures
  • Support development of MetLife’s sustainability report. Work with stakeholders across the company and across markets to develop relevant content, manage external agency partners and lead efforts to enhance overall disclosure strategy
  • Spearhead research and develop data analysis as needed on ESG-related topics and emerging market trends
  • Implement programs and best practices that help drive achievement on MetLife’s 2030 DEI and climate goals
  • Collaborate with internal departments/markets to identify key ESG gaps/opportunities and advance new programs the drive value and minimize risk
  • Drive efforts to position MetLife as a thought leader, collaborator and contributor to solutions that address pressing societal issues
  • Work closely with Global Communications and Global Brand & Marketing to develop and execute sustainability messaging and engagement activities that drive increased communication on MetLife’s sustainability priorities
  • Develop strategies to actively promote awareness of MetLife’s sustainability strategies and programs to internal and external stakeholders
  • Increase public recognition of MetLife’s commitment to sustainability by developing company responses to customer requests, industry surveys and environmental, social and governance (ESG) investor indices (ex. Dow Jones, MSCI, Sustainalytics, etc.)
  • Lead creation of storytelling, key messaging, and sustainability materials/asset development in collaboration with functions/markets
  • Work cross-functionally to bolster governance processes in alignment with growing global regulatory requirements
  • Engage with ESG ratings agencies and investor groups to verify, confirm and augment publicly available information through the year
  • Partner with functions/markets to support development of policies, frameworks, and reporting in response to local sustainability priorities and requirements

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Strong expertise in communications/marketing and ability to create short- and long-form content for campaigns, stakeholder engagement programs, digital channels, and company reports
  • 7 – 10+ years of experience working on sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), ESG issues broadly
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Sustainability, ESG, Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, Environmental Science or related field
  • Deep expertise on ESG, sustainability and climate issues
  • Experience in a Sustainability, Operations, Real Estate, Procurement, Public Affairs, Marketing and/or Communications role
  • Knowledge of corporate sustainability, green buildings, environmental social and governance (ESG) risks, sustainability development, and supply chain management required
  • Knowledge of sustainability standards, tools, and reporting mechanisms (ex. GHG Protocol, CDP, GRI, SASB, etc.), and emerging practices (ex. FSB TCFD, UN Sustainable Development Goals, global regulatory requirements etc.)
  • Demonstrated excellence in understanding brand building and integrating sustainability into the company’s strategy and implementation efforts
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and outstanding relationship building skills at all levels of the organization, including senior executives.
  • Proven track record of collaborating across a matrixed organization to build alignment on, and advance, key strategies
  • Excellent skills developing and managing relationships across a multitude of internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills – written, oral, PowerPoint/Visual
  • Strong ability to collaborate across the organization and drive a shared agenda that recognizes and supports business needs
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to track, measure and identify business improvement solutions

 

Preferred:

  • Experience working at a Fortune 200 company or consultancy/agency focused on CSR, sustainability, ESG issues and/or corporate affairs
  • Experience working in a corporate environment
