Role Value Proposition:


MetLife’s Tax Team has an exciting opportunity for a Tax Counsel to join our group.  Tax Counsel will report to an AVP of Tax and will help to support virtually all of the worldwide operations from a direct and indirect tax standpoint.  The support will lend itself to legal analysis required by Tax Counsel, vital to every major decision within MetLife, and the technical positions reflected in the tax return filings and the regulated financial reporting.  Tax Counsel will interface with business units to discuss tax impact and planning for the units, including receiving potential business ideas and then analyzing those for tax ramifications. 


Key Responsibilities:


  • Tax legal analysis and advice regarding aspects of investments, general planning and some M&A
  • Support tax legal analysis for various tax returns throughout MetLife
  • Support tax legal analysis and documentation for financial reporting purposes
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on legal advice, outside accounting firms and outside investment fund administrators to ensure above responsibilities are met
  • Performs other general tax Counsel duties as needed


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:



  • JD (or equivalent), and preferably an LLM in Taxation
  • 2+ years of tax experience, preferably working at a law firm, major accounting firm, government, or large international public company
  • Demonstrates good judgment and independence, and the ability to handle multiple priorities within tight time constraints
  • Exhibits excellent people skills, teamwork and collaboration



  • Can handle legal matters with minimal supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and can explain complex tax issues to non-tax personnel in a meaningful and useful manner
