The communications director is an experienced communications professional who serves as a global business partner, providing strategic communications counsel and support to senior business leaders.


This role will report to the assistant vice president and work closely with his/her colleagues to develop a comprehensive global communications and PR strategy to expand the reach and impact of the MetLife story.


The director will be one of the team’s subject matter experts, including but not limited to the areas of global service, customer experience, operations, digital self-servicing technologies, and online payments. They will also support a wide range of transformation projects, working closely with global business functions and MetLife’s broader communications team.


In this role, he/she will partner with MetLife’s communications and business teams to brainstorm, pitch, write, produce, and distribute stories both internally and externally. Communications and media relations will be strategic and tactical – creating awareness, excitement, and understanding of the new technologies and management methods that are changing how employees work and how customers are serviced.


This person will also be directly responsible for leading employee engagement efforts utilizing internal social platforms, video, blogs, live events and more. He/she will be a savvy and confident reporter, as well as a team player, consulting with colleagues and business leaders on appropriate media, communication methods, and key messages to best reach target audiences.


Key Responsibilities:  

High-level responsibilities of this role include:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy and cohesive plan on the corporate level across multiple internal channels: online, video, print, and events.
  • Create an integrated PR platform that harnesses executive voices to amplify our company story and unique perspective through editorial, earned media, and thought leadership.
  • Leverage relationships with key media and industry figures in support of planned product and/or service launches and corporate announcements.
  • Identify industry and market trends to understand key perceptions, motivations and drivers related to service, operations, technology and security.
  • Partner with several internal business groups to proactively lead and execute communication projects and campaigns that align with, articulate and support the company's key messages, business priorities and growth initiatives, as well as influence a positive culture and engaged employee base.
  • Work across traditional and digital channels, as well as geographic regions, to tailor programs based on understanding of local business needs and priorities.
  • Engage and direct global and regional leaders so they play an active role in the communication process with their teams. 
  • Drive new approaches to deliver communications in more creative, efficient, and effective ways by challenging processes and recommending new approaches.
  • Use measurement tools to assess the impact of communications programs to refine activities
  • Work effectively through shared processes with others at all levels within the organization. 


Supervisory and Relationship Management Responsibilities: 

  • Ability to lead and motivate project team members that are not direct reports.


Essential Business Experience and Skills:



  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, marketing, or related discipline.
  • 8+ years relevant business experience, including written and multimedia content.
  • Superior project management skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex information internally and externally.
  • Self-starter with an ability to handle a variety of responsibilities by taking initiative.
  • Proven relationship management skills.
  • Proven blended PR and social media skills.
  • Must have the ability to understand cultural nuances.
  • Must be a reliable and flexible team player with a friendly and professional attitude.



  • Experience in technology, digital, and/or creative-related industries, experience producing content for a variety of emerging digital platforms, understanding of UX and UI fundamentals.
