MetLife is seeking a dynamic Intellectual Property Specialist (non-attorney) who will focus on maintaining the trademark and patent dockets, research factual and legal issues, help draft filings and communications, and advise business partners on internal and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office practices.  This individual will work with attorneys and business partners around the world and will support intellectual property needs across the enterprise.  This role will work closely and collaboratively with professionals across Legal Affairs, Marketing and various lines of business as well as external intellectual property counsel.  In addition, this person will help support various business and vendor contracting processes, including analyzing agreements for adherence to templates and drafting alternative language based on provided guidelines.


Key Responsibilities:  


  • Manage an extensive trademark and patent docket, ensuring that deadlines are met well in advance and working with business partners to secure specimens and information needed for supporting applications and renewals.
  • Act as the unit’s Sharepoint coordinator, which includes facilitating the intake and workflow of trademark and patent matters, maintenance and updates to intellectual property related content, and point-of-contact for intellectual property and other corporate records/information management.
  • Research factual and legal issues in connection with various Intellectual property filings.
  • Prepare initial drafts of office action responses and draft communications to business partners across the enterprise in connection with MetLife’s intellectual property practice; work with external counsel, as needed.
  • Provide support on contractual matters that come into GTO and Intellectual Property Legal Unit.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:





  • Has experience in any of the following areas: internet, domain name and social media monitoring, international trademark issues, copyright issues, insurance and/or other financial services, navigating multinational organizations.
  • Demonstrates persuasion and leadership skills, especially in the context of the ability to relate to different stakeholders, business partners and colleagues.
  • Capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated record of initiative and foresight.
  • General commercial contract experience, specifically with regard to reviewing and drafting  contracts for the sponsorship of small corporate events and conferences.
