Role Value Proposition:

The US Operational Risk Officer will lead the risk function overseeing the implementation of MetLife’s operational risk management framework within the US. He/she will partner with:


  • Corporate Risk Management in the continued development of our enterprise-wide operational risk management framework and;
  • First line operational risk managers within the US lines of business and supporting functions to ensure effective implementation of that framework


    This leader will play a key role in setting the vision for how the risk function successfully engages with the business to identify, monitor and manage key operational risks to the delivery of our strategic priorities. This new role is being established to advance the operational risk agenda within the US business.


Key Responsibilities:

The position requires an experienced risk management professional who can:

  • Contribute to the development of MetLife’s enterprise-wide operational risk management framework under the leadership of Corporate Risk Management
  • Partner with Audit, Compliance, IT Risk, Operations and business unit control agenda owners to coordinate testing and self-assessment activities
  • Monitor loss event reporting for the US and identify emerging operational risk trends or specific vulnerabilities that are not identified or appropriately prioritized in existing risk assessments
  • Participate in business risk self-assessment exercises, from initial prioritization and scoping through execution to remediation plan development
  • Review operational risk controls for effectiveness and coordinate testing of those controls where deemed appropriate
  • Monitor the implementation of remediation plans for effective and timely execution
  • Where needed establish KPIs for tracking the evolution of US business operational risk exposures
  • Partner with business to ensure that governance and procedures associated with loss event reporting, risk self-assessments, remediation tracking and operational risk reporting are effective
  • Act as a trusted advisor to owners of the control agenda for the US business
  • Attract and develop talent within Global Risk Management


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 10+ years’ experience in operational risk or a combination of operations and risk in insurance or banking
  • 5+ years managing staff
  • Ability to coordinate across lines of business and organizations to influence risk reduction actions
  • Professional designation (e.g. Certified Public Accountant, Certified Enterprise Risk Analyst, Member of Society of Actuaries, Chartered Financial Analyst) preferred
