The Role:

The AVP Group Benefits will be part of the U.S. Business Communications team and serve as the communications partner for MetLife’s flagship Group Benefits business, which offers employee benefit solutions to companies across the country. This business is in the midst of a broad transformation and communications will be critical to clarifying, repeating and driving understanding of the change agenda. Your priorities will be to translate business strategies into actionable communications plans, proactively identify opportunities for communications to contribute to business goals and use communications to effectively engage employees and share our story with external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Bring a strategic mindset and understanding of how to assess risks and opportunities and formulate communications plans that serve the company’s interest.
  • Collaborate with and serve as communications advisor to senior leaders within the Group Benefits business.
  • Create value for the company by crafting the right messages for the right audiences to achieve the right outcomes and coordinating delivery through multiple channels and individuals.
  • Understand business objectives at a level of detail necessary to develop multi-stakeholder communication strategies and identify new ways communications can contribute to solving business challenges.
  • Use communications effectively to drive culture change.
  • Partner with the head of U.S. Business Communications on storytelling and managing proactive and reactive media relations.
  • Cut through the noise to identify critical messages for employees and differentiating story ideas for the media.
  • Work with marketing and other functions to deliver integrated solutions that help thought leadership and other relevant content reach the target audience and inspire desired reactions.
  • Establish strong relationships across the company that enable you to have a deep understanding of how employees are feeling and build advocates and support for the comms solutions you recommend.
  • Assess effectiveness of communications impact to drive continuous improvement and alignment with business objectives.
  • Prioritize initiatives to drive greatest stakeholder impact.
  • Bring strong executive presence and confidence to all interactions.
  • Lead a team and help them develop their careers.

  • Reports to:  Vice President Communications, U.S. Business
  • Direct reports/team: Two direct reports
  • Key Stakeholders: Head of Group Benefits and Group Benefits senior leadership team

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 12+ years in communications
  • Experience developing and executing communications plans
  • Proven track record of successful media relations and employee engagement activations
  • Experience working with senior business leaders and partnering with marketing and other third parties
  • Sound judgment as a communications professional
  • High proficiency in written and verbal communication
  • High energy and strong work ethic
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, journalism, or related field

The wage range for applicants for this position is $151,000 to $201,300. This role is also eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock based long-term incentives. MetLife offers a comprehensive benefits program, including healthcare benefits, life insurance, retirement benefits, parental leave, legal plan services and paid time off. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
