Department: The Corporate Ethics and Compliance Department (“CEC”) manages the firm’s compliance risks to prevent violations of law, rule, or regulation, and designs and delivers a compliance risk management framework that maintains risk levels within the firm's risk appetite and protects the franchise.  CEC is a risk-based department, focused on emerging risks, and providing constructive challenge to the business and functions, partnering closely with them to implement strong processes and effective controls, as well as to better foster and embed a culture of compliance. CEC monitors trends and changes in regulations and develops and implements firmwide and divisional policies and procedures.


The Role: The AVP, Head of Compliance Risk Metrics & Monitoring will be responsible for the creation and implementation of meaningful compliance risk metrics and reporting across the enterprise. These metrics will demonstrate to the businesses and functions what their compliance risks are, and what controls are working and what needs improvement, as well as help create a more strategic and meaningful testing and monitoring plan that is refined and scoped more effectively.  This role will also be responsible for setting the CEC technology and automation strategy to improve oversight capabilities, the control environment, reporting, and CEC metrics and data analytics, working closely with our GTO partners.


This role will ensure enterprise-wide adherence to compliance standards through the use of data and technology. In addition, the role will work closely with stakeholders throughout Compliance, Risk, Audit, Technology, Legal and the Business to evaluate and enhance current programs to develop more scalable, sustainable, and automated internal compliance capabilities and processes, playing a key role in managing compliance risk.


Key Responsibilities:

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for operationalizing compliance standards, processes, and responsibilities across the enterprise, including:

  • Develop and implement relevant metrics and reporting capabilities to assess enterprise-wide compliance risk
  • Build and implement an integrated strategy for risk-based testing, monitoring, surveillance to assess the adequacy of 1st line controls 
  • Oversee issue and audit management, escalating and reporting to key stakeholders 
  • Expand data analytics capabilities to develop a consistent view of risk
  • Oversee and manage compliance technology strategy, budget, coordination across all stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure the right execution, communication, and resources are in place to deliver on key milestones
  • Collaborate with CEC leadership in understanding the impact of compliance strategy on broader operations and support requirements that allow capabilities to scale
  • Drive automation of manual processes and reporting
  • Manage and develop robust compliance monitoring systems
  • Partner with technology teams to identify and deploy technologies that enhance efficiency
  • Identify compliance training needs and finding and administering solutions
  • Develop, maintain and (as needed) present materials describing the compliance risk management framework to senior audience including, but not limited to, Functional / Business Leads
  • Serve as an influential member of the CEC organization, driving solutions across lines of defense
  • Demonstrate key leadership behaviors:

    • Interacting with senior line of business and Enterprise leaders to drive action address key compliance risks faced by MetLife.

Candidate Qualifications:


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in related business (insurance/financial services) in compliance, legal, audit or related role
  • Be highly organized with strong written and verbal communication skills, maturity and presence to interact with members of MetLife’s senior leadership
  • Proactive, commercial and solutions oriented, intellectually curious, operates with a sense of urgency
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to coordinate across lines of business and organizations to influence actions
  • Extensive industry experience, with strong compliance background
  • Ability to identify risks and apply strategies to minimize them
  • Ability to manage complex projects to a successful outcome
  • Ability to navigate complex and competing goals and interests to achieve results
