Role Value Proposition: 

We are looking for a Design System Product Manager who has a passion for design systems and will be at the center of Design, Engineering and Product partnership to build and continuously evolve MetLife’s design system. S/He will take a systems-mindset to build and integrate consistent and user-centric components across the product portfolio to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of digital experience delivery at MetLife. Emphasis will be on the complete System’s life cycle, from establishing the Design System as a product, practice and vision that endures to design, build, document and maintain a library of reusable components to be leveraged by product teams across MetLife’s markets and regions. The Product Manager will be responsible for aligning the vision for the Design System to the customer and business goals of MetLife’s lines of business, prioritize the roadmap based on those goals, define the right engagement model that brings the internal Design, Engineering and Product teams into an integrated way of working and build a communications strategy to drive adoption and create feedback loops with consuming product teams.

The Design System Product Manager will establish and be a leader on a team of dedicated designers and engineers, and will not only define and drive the Design System’s vision and strategy but also the day-to-day execution. This includes leading all aspects of product development and product operations for the team. Initially, s/he will help the team make decisions and guide the roadmap for building out a component library, identifying system architecture and distribution methods and tools.

The ideal candidate will have an ample and proven experience with Design Systems. As a manager of a product that serves other products, this person must be great at building relationships, have strong communications skills to clearly articulate the business value and long-term impact of a Design System and have a passion for being a change agent.


Key Responsibilities:  

  • Build MetLife’s global design system team comprised of persistent and dedicated team of designers, engineers and other members.
  • Lead the evolution of MetLife’s current design system, by defining a clear vision, roadmap and supporting guidelines and tools.
  • Lead the conversations with the IT team and agree on the choice of technologies that enable us to create the best possible user experience while remaining cost effective in production and operation
  • Ensure the coded libraries of components and templates look, animate, and work as intended on supporting devices
  • Establish the appropriate governance model including processes and routines that emphasizes effective and efficient collaboration among Design, Engineering and Product teams globally.
  • Working within agile process, execute roadmap and work through backlog refinement
  • Oversee design and development of the design system for Web, iOS and Android – lead the visual and technical direction of the experience design, visual/animation/interaction style that reflects our branding and technical tooling
  • Lead the creation of user tested UI elements, components, templates, and various guidelines including writing, content, SEO, and accessibility for designers and engineers
  • Decisively resolve priorities, timing, risks and possible breaking changes
  • Report team and system progress regularly to the design system Advisory Board comprised of design and IT leaders
  • Drive and advocate for Design System adoption across MetLife’s markets and regions
  • Oversee the quality in adoption of the Design System components
  • Define ways to measure success of the Design System and implement, including utilization and usability of the design system
  • Track impact of the Design System for continuous reporting and enhancements
  • Lead system release planning activities and system releases
  • Foster open dialogue with product owners using the system
  • Align research activity to assess and inform system enhancements


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • 10+ years of professional experience focused on development of digital experiences and products
  • Proven product management experience in setting product direction based on user needs and business objectives, from discovery through delivery
  • Deep technical understanding of Design Systems (preferably at large scale) that bridges both design and engineering
  • Good understanding of the latest technologies and IT trends
  • Ability to balance requirements from business, designers, and developers for an optimal solution
  • Ability to balance governance and flexibility to support local markets to succeed
  • Experience with React based experiences
  • Experience with AEM content management systems
  • Knowledge and experience addressing accessibility requirements – WCAG 2.1+
  • Experience in Agile practices and delivery
  • Ability to lead, influence and operate effectively in a highly matrixed and complex environment in order to align stakeholders and secure resources/investment for product roadmap
  • Ability to build and manage relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Entrepreneurial and experimental mindset, can-do spirit and ability to work and thrive in an evolving environment
