The Technical Accounting Group, (TAG,) has the corporate-wide responsibility (1) to establish, monitor and provide assurance that the accounting policies of MetLife worldwide are in accordance with applicable authoritative guidance, (2) to partner with business unit personnel across all regions and lines of business to ensure timely and accurate implementation, interpretation and administration of these policies and (3) to influence standard setters to ensure prospective changes to accounting principles fully consider the views of MetLife and the insurance industry.


The Role

This position would primarily support development of accounting policies and accounting advisory work supporting our global operations, including but not limited to: Mergers and acquisitions, Technology and operations, Treasury, Tax, and Financial reporting. This role would manage overall operations of the TAG group to meet our ongoing stakeholder requirements and drive best practices and efficiencies within the team.  Additionally, the role would lead the team of TAG professionals supporting Regional and Functional leads within the team, including a team of professionals overseas.

  • Reports to: VP Technical Accounting Group
  • Direct Reports: Eight
  • Key Stakeholders: SVP External Reporting, Technical Accounting & Internal Controls, Head – Mergers & Acquisitions, VP – Tax, SVP Financial Operations, VP, Ratings Capital and Liquidity, and VP External Reporting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the research, documentation and resolution of various technical accounting issues, primarily as they relate to global functions under US GAAP, and US Stat and IFRS where applicable
  • Support the quarterly financial reporting processes under both US GAAP and US Stat, including the review of various notes to the financial statements and timely resolution of accounting issues that arise during this process
  • Provide advisory support for the accounting associated with various strategic initiatives, including overseeing the implementation and operationalization of those accounting recommendations
  • Work to drive consistency in application of accounting principles globally
  • Manage team of professionals supporting Regional and Functional leads within TAG, to meet ongoing stakeholder requirements and support quarterly reporting processes
  • With an efficiency mindset identify and deliver process improvements within the operations of the TAG group
  • Management of SOX processes within team, and oversight of overall projects within TAG
  • Developing and delivering relevant and timely education sessions to finance and other personnel
  • Monitoring developments under US GAAP and US Stat and working with our business partners to assess potential implications to the business
  • This individual would lead a team to support successful execution and completion of the activities noted above.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex accounting issues and transactions and drive implementation recommendations
  • Strong presentation skills – ability to explain and summarize complex concepts in accurate and practical terms, describe economic impacts, alternative accounting treatments and associated cost / benefits to stakeholders
  • Ability to work across matrix organization to influence resolution of accounting and reporting matters, including strong documentation and review of accounting alternatives and decisions
  • Broad and deep experience in accounting for business acquisitions and divestitures within the financial services industry, various financing structures, stock-based and other compensation schemes along, with strong knowledge of SEC disclosure requirements
  • CPA license required to be maintained Undergraduate degree required, MBA or other advanced degree preferred
