This new leadership role reports to the Global Head of MetLife’s Technical Accounting Group (TAG).  TAG has the corporate-wide responsibility (1) to establish, monitor and provide assurance that the accounting policies of MetLife worldwide are in accordance with applicable authoritative guidance, (2) to partner with business unit personnel across all regions and lines of business to ensure timely and accurate implementation, interpretation and administration of these policies and (3) to influence standard setters to ensure prospective changes to accounting principles fully consider the views of MetLife and the insurance industry. 



The Role:

The Vice President – Corporate and Investments Technical Accounting will work closely with the Global Head of MetLife’s Technical Accounting Group in a leadership capacity to support strategic initiatives, including finance transformation, accounting standards change and adoption activities as well as to lead the implementation of best practices for operating a global accounting policy function on a day-to-day basis.

This is a global role and carries with it the responsibility for assisting the Global Head of MetLife’s Technical Accounting Group in managing and overseeing all of TAG’s responsibilities across all regional and topical areas of the global CFO organization, as well as having direct focus on SEC reporting, treasury, employee benefits, stock compensation, investments and fair value, derivatives and hedging, consolidation, foreign exchange, income taxes, M&A, planning & projections, and other areas. 

This role involves significant interaction with MetLife senior management with the CFO organization, as well as senior leaders within Global Technology and Operations, Legal, Employee Benefits, Marketing, and other Corporate areas.


Key Responsibilities:

The principle responsibilities of this position include:

•             Working closely with TAG and finance leadership to manage strategic initiatives, influence accounting standards adoption and implement and operationalize ongoing best practices

•             Managing the research, documentation and resolution of technical accounting issues in the following areas, primarily with respect to US GAAP and US STAT:

o             SEC reporting

o             Employee Benefits

o             Stock Compensation

o             Treasury

o             Investments and Fair Value

o             Derivatives and Hedging

o             M&A (Acquisitions and Dispositions)

o             Consolidation

o             Income Taxes

o             Other Corporate Functions


•             Partner with leaders in the above functional areas to ensuring the appropriate accounting for new business initiatives, new products and services, and other significant and/or non-standard transactions.

•             Serve as the primary technical accounting support to the SEC reporting team and SEC legal team with respect to 10-K’s, 10-Q’s and other filings of MetLife Inc and MetLife Insurance Company, coordinating the quarterly review of the completeness and technical correctness of (1) all changes to presentation and disclosures, (2) changes to written representations made by management to the Company’ external auditors, and (3) materiality analyses with respect to out-of-period items.

•             Ensure consistent application of existing accounting policies across all functional areas noted above, and also manage the development of new policies and modification to existing policies, as needed.

•             Keep up to date with new accounting developments in the above functional areas, and oversee the development of implementation guidance for new accounting pronouncements.

•             Take the lead role in drafting comment letters to accounting standard setters, actively participating in industry working groups involved in interpreting, analyzing and commenting on developments to accounting standards

•             Take the lead role in coordinating MetLife’s responses to SEC comment letters

•             Play a leading role in developing and delivering relevant and timely education and training sessions to finance and other personnel

Candidate Qualifications:

   Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 20+ years of experience within Finance in a global organization
  • CPA preferred, undergraduate degree required, MBA or other advanced degree also preferred
  • Proven technical accounting ability and experience of operationalizing accounting guidance
  • Strong track record of understand the “end to end” of the accounting process from Administration systems to financial reporting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence outcomes and gain team member and stakeholder buy in
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively drive change e.g. system consolidations, process automation
  • Critical thinker and highly analytical with ability to solve complex problems that include the application of both good business sense and common sense
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem solving skills, ability to interpret data and synthesize complex issues to identify best solutions
  • Cultural awareness, with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively across all levels within the organization and external customers
