Department: The Corporate Ethics and Compliance Department (“CEC”) delivers a compliance risk framework that enables MetLife’s lines of businesses and corporate functions to comply with applicable internal and external rules and regulations, maintain risk levels, within MetLife’s risk appetite, and integrate ethics and compliance principles across MetLife. Within CEC, the Investments Compliance department provides oversight and coverage to MetLife Investment Management (MIM), a global asset manager with over $600 billion of total assets under management.  


The Role: This position will be a critical member of the Investments Compliance Team, providing coverage, oversight, and strategic partnership to MIM’s UK and Ireland regulated entity as well as MetLife investments activities across the Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The Compliance Assistant will partner with the first line to develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies and controls and conduct risk-based testing, monitoring, and surveillance oversight activities. For the MIM UK regulated entity, they will review marketing and financial promotion materials to ensure compliance with applicable FCA rules. This role will also be responsible for other core Compliance activities including regulatory filings, escalations, and tracking of issues for EMEA Investments.


This role would be expected to stay abreast of applicable laws, rules and regulations ensuring they are then incorporated with advice offered to the Investments teams. They will partner closely with Compliance colleagues across MIM’s US and Asia businesses. The individual will be required to make sound judgment-based decisions and answer complicated compliance risk-related questions, put appropriate controls in place to mitigate risks, and exercise judgment to know when issues need to be further escalated to senior management for consideration and deliberation.


The Compliance Assistant will report directly to the Chief Compliance Officer for EMEA Investments.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, enhance, and implement compliance activities to meet regulatory expectations
  • Review existing compliance policies and procedures and make enhancements to strengthen processes, procedures and policies and stay ahead of regulatory requirements and expectations
  • Identify issues, escalate and analyze having regard to the complexity of risks and regulations in an asset management business.
  • Assist CCO in submission of regulatory filings as and when required
  • Review and approve sales and financial promotions marketing materials  
  • Work collaboratively with business partners including those in IT, Legal Affairs, Corporate Licensing, and Internal Audit.
  • Stay abreast of changes in the regulatory environment and analyze the business impact of regulatory changes
  • Provide meaningful compliance reporting to senior management
  • Work closely with peers in CEC to ensure consistent processes and approaches are followed and that synergies are realized, and provide Compliance support to other areas, as needed.



Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Would suit a compliance professional with 2-3 years of experience in a compliance or audit or related role (with experience in asset management preferred but not essential)
  • Understanding of relevant FCA securities laws and regulations
  • Understanding of applicable laws, regulations and requirements, including industry practices
  • Experience in conducting monitoring and surveillance activities
  • Easily translates compliance matters to business executives and externally can interface with relevant regulatory authorities if needed
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and conduct presentations and communicate with senior and executive management
  • Must be a dedicated, self-motivated individual with an ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • High degree of professionalism, sound judgment and discretion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to develop partnerships and relationships throughout the organization
  • Ability to think proactively and make recommendations and complex decisions, and to anticipate regulatory needs and expectations and plan for them
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional ability to manage confidential information in a professional manner
  • Thinks 2-3 years ahead and can identify how to accomplish future goals
  • Educational background – minimum Bachelor’s Degree, Law preferred


This role is subject to the Senior Manager and Certification Regime.
