Role Summary:

This role reports to regional operational risk lead who has a role of building regional non-financial risk operating model in coordination with Regional CRO, Global Operational Risk Team and the first line Business Control partners; provides direction and support on operational risk management (ORM) framework and MetLife Non-Financial Risk Assessment (NFRA) initiatives.  This role acts as a coordinator between the Global Operational Risk Team and Local Operational Risk Managers, ensuring consistent implementation of the non-financial risk management framework at a local level, and escalating risks, issues, and concerns to global level, where appropriate.

 

This role will support escalation of key risks, events and major control deficiencies to Asia Regional Risk Committee or other sub-committees, providing review and challenge to overall governance. It also aggregates Operational Risk view; Maintains ongoing engagement with regional leadership and regulators on areas of focus and raises potential concerns.

This role understands Corporate Governance structure, insurance business operations and regulatory environment across the region and escalates any deviations from the MetLife policy and/or applicable law or regulations in the countries.

 

This role has good knowledge and experience on design and maintenance of Enterprise Risk Management framework (or NFRA Framework) and IT risk and controls to ensure reasonable assurance on internal controls so that the risks are managed within risk appetite and risk events are avoided to achieve business objectives efficiently and effectively.

This role understands the concepts of ESG, Climate Risk and Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) framework to support country risk teams to build climate risk management frameworks aligned with MetLife climate risk framework.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Set and Maintain Non-Financial Risk Framework

  • Provide education/guidance to the business to ensure appropriate non-financial risk governance.
  • Ensure alignment between local, regional and enterprise governance.
  • Maintain key non-financial risk indicators and risk dashboard for Asia (Ex-Japan), in collaboration with the businesses.
  • Review policies/standards, authorities and responsibilities and guidelines for all operations within Asia (Ex-Japan).

Operate the Risk Framework

  • Ensure tools and processes are in place to identify and measure risks.
  • Ensure risks are monitored and reported relative to the risk appetite and risk indicators.
  • Drive risk discussions, provide input, and ensure decisions are made regarding risk acceptance/mitigation.

Business Partnership and Guidance

  • For Asia (Ex-Japan), review risk from/to strategy, business plan and IT/Infra plan to ensure risks are managed within established risk appetite.
  • Foster a strong risk management culture in Asia, including effective training and communication.
  • Actively participate in management of crisis situations as they arise.
  • Function as the primary liaison with Asia on all corporate risk programs and initiatives and on any risk event and issues identified within Global Risk Management.

Regulatory/External Stakeholders

  • Monitor emerging regulatory/capital requirements across Asia (Ex-Japan) and work to bring influence to bear in line with MetLife’s interest.
  • Develop relationships and keep abreast of Asia financial / insurance industry related issues/topics.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework, especially in corporate governance, IT risk and controls, RCSA (Risk Control Self-Assessment) and ORSA (Own Risk and Solvency Assessment).
  • Substantial experience and strong knowledge of the Life insurance business operations and product and regulatory environment across Asia, and proven ability to work effectively with business partners and serve as a constructive member of the regional team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work with and influence others with divergent backgrounds and at various levels, including internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be fluent in English. Good Chinese (Mandarin) is preferred.
  • Must be experienced with Microsoft business tools (Powerpoint, Spreadsheet, Power BI, etc.). Python and QlikSense preferred.
