Overview

The Regional Risk Management organization is aligned with and embedded in our businesses and helps ensure that our risks are appropriately identified, measured and managed.  The Regional Risk team ensures that risk is considered in developing our business strategies, and that risk management activities are adopted in all our business units.  The team also represents the businesses in enterprise discussions of risk, ensuring they have a voice, and that business realities are reflected in decision making.

This position serves as the Risk Manager for Asia excluding Japan in eight countries with the focus in market and product risk management.  Asia is MetLife’s second largest geographic region, with annual revenue of over $11 billion and operating earnings of $1.2 billion.  Asia operates in Japan, Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia, Nepal, South Korea and Vietnam.  These operations provide a key source of future growth for the company, and the region is integral to the company’s strategic focus on emerging markets. 

 

The Director, Risk Management Asia ex. Japan will be based in Hong Kong, and will report directly to the Head of Risk Management, Asia ex. Japan.

The jobholder will ensure that all of our material risks are properly identified, measured, understood, reported, monitored, and managed.  The successful candidate is accountable for establishing and maintaining a strong risk management framework and risk culture across MetLife’s operations in Asia for working locally/regionally to identify and resolve risk issues, and for proactively communicating regarding all risk issues both with local/regional leadership, and within Global Risk Management.

 

Major Accountabilities

Governance

  • Responsible for operations of ALM ex Japan working group
  • Provide input/guidance to the business to ensure appropriate overall governance is in place
  • Ensure alignment between local, regional and enterprise governance

Operate the Risk Framework

  • Ensure tools and processes are in place to identify and measure risks
  • Ensure risks are monitored and reported relative to the risk appetite and limits
  • Drive risk discussions, provide input, and ensure decisions are made regarding risk acceptance/mitigation

Business Partnership and Guidance

  • Foster a strong risk management culture in Asia, including effective training and communication
  • Actively participate in management of crisis situations as they arise
  • Communicate on all corporate risk programs and initiatives and on any risk issues identified within Global Risk Management.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the life insurance industry, regulation, and risk management framework
  • Experience in knowledge of the insurance markets in Asia
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work with and influence others with different backgrounds and at different levels
  • Bachelor’s degree (or greater) in a finance-related field
  • FRM or CFA required

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Financial, insurance product development or actuarial background
  • Knowledge in derivative instruments
  • Strong problem solving skills

 

Location

  • Role is based in Hong Kong
  • Travel may be required
