Key Responsibilities: 

 

MetLife is seeking a versatile and highly motivated attorney to join its legal plan, privacy, and healthcare savings account legal teams as Senior Counsel.  These legal teams are responsible for advising MetLife Legal Plans in all aspects of its business, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in its healthcare savings account line of business, and our U.S. Group Business in privacy law.  This role will report to the Assistant Vice President, Distribution and GEB Unit.

 

Interested candidates should have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • The laws and regulations governing legal plans and health savings and spending accounts.
  • Federal and state privacy laws, including Gramm-Leach-Bliley, HIPAA, CCPA, CAN-SPAM and state do-not-solicit laws.
  • Handling potential personal data incidents, including advising business partners on regulatory notification obligations.
  • Reviewing and negotiating customer and vendor contracts, including privacy and data security agreements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Providing timely and pragmatic advice and counsel to business clients in connection with legal plans and vendor contracts.
  • Analyzing and negotiating complex privacy agreements.
  • Managing external counsel and coordinating with other internal constituencies to ensure timely delivery of appropriate advice.
  • Advising on issues related to insurance company regulatory and governance issues.
  • Staying abreast of legal and regulatory developments and business trends impacting legal plans, privacy, and healthcare savings accounts and providing client training, as necessary.

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

 

Required:

  • Juris Doctorate and excellent academic credentials from an ABA-accredited school.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience group benefits and/or privacy law, either with a law firm, insurance company or other financial services institution.  
  • Ability to explain privacy concepts to business partners.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state and a member in good standing of the bar.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a limited license if not already appropriately licensed in Ohio or New York.
  • A strong work ethic and customer-service mentality.
  • Demonstrated legal, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred:

  • Experience reviewing and negotiating benefits contracts.
  • Ability to train junior associates and paraprofessionals.
  • An understanding of relevant state and federal laws and regulations impacting benefits providers.
  • Knowledge of insurance products a plus, particularly disability.
