The Role: The VP of Application Development Shared Services will lead a critical application development team reporting directly to the US CIO.  This role is responsible for the end-to-end technical strategy, solution delivery and overall application ownership for a complex and diverse portfolio of Shared Capabilities supporting over MetLife’s operations and strategic growth.  The role is responsible for managing a team of 85+ associates and 300-400+ contractors across locations in the US, India and Ireland. 


The shared platforms include:

  • ETL
  • Real time Integration
  • Internal / External API Strategy
  • Content Management
  • Business Process Management
  • Security and Entitlements
  • Business Rules engines


This role is responsible for a $45MM+ portfolio supporting all US business lines (Retail, Group, Property & Casualty, Retirement Income Solutions) and capabilities. This role interacts across a diverse set of senior leaders across the business and technology landscape and enables over $500M in transformation programs. The person will drive continued adoption and re-use of shared services to reduce cost in the US as well as identifying and driving opportunities to adopt shared capabilities outside the US.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive a dozen+ initiatives internally focused on standardization and efficiency models in the shared service software development process and tooling improvement initiatives across GTO.
  • Keep current on industry trends & patterns that could change how we deliver projects.
  • Oversee development of regional applications with a keen eye towards risk, scalability, and infrastructure and technology roadmap.
  • Oversee development of several high risk, high-complexity, multi-year transformational initiatives within each US business unit.
  • Manage development teams across multiple vendors and geographies that work on custom applications, mobile development, front-end and service orientated development.
  • Oversee delivery schedule and execution on 50-60 applications across 50-100 concurrent projects.
  • Identify and capture demand from the business stakeholders and ensure key IT components necessary to deliver the business priorities are identified and fed into the application development demand pipeline.
  • Coordinate planning, integration and execution for strategic or multi-country/regional activities.
  • Combines very deep insurance process and systems domain knowledge across all business segment operations/product development on a portfolio of systems dating back 25 years. 
  • Key business and IT tooling enabling focused


Travel:  20% domestic, 5% global


Key Relationships:

  • Reports to: SVP & CIO RAD-US
  • Direct reports/team: 8 direct/85+ total team/300-400 vendor resources
  • Key Stakeholders:  This role works with stakeholders across IT, Business & Legal teams, Operations, Engineering and AMS teams, along with visionaries in the consulting space.


Candidate Qualifications:

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 15+ years of experience in large, global corporate environment preferably in Insurance or financial services industry; 10+ years of application development with at least 3 years running a diverse set of Shared Service technologies and platforms.
  • Diverse and deep understanding of commercial vendor technologies and packaged applications
  • Ability to drive technology leadership, extensive technical programming, software design, coding and unit testing best practices with large-scale matrixed team management across a vast array of business initiatives and technology platforms.
  • Strong Executive leadership skills; collaborative partner able to influence and drive accountability across organizational, geographic and domain boundaries for alignment, approvals, decision-making and governance.  Experience leading large, global matrix managed initiatives
  • Excels at leading and directing activities of distributed, global teams and ability to direct, motivate and develop staff in an evolving environment.  Fosters teamwork and collaboration.  Proven experience building accountable teams empowered to achieve results
  • Demonstrable capability for problem solving, decision making, sound judgement, assertiveness
  • Expert influencing skills to manage internal/external stakeholders, business partners, and teams of diverse composition (e.g. varying skill sets; in-house and outsourced)
  • Related field experience required; Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with Agile, DevOps and various aspects of software development technology automation a plus
