Duties and Responsibilities:

The position involves the development, enhancement, implementation, and maintenance of application software utilizing mainframe-based technologies. It involves the support of both batch and online processing as well as the development of real-time APIs to and from interfacing partners using newer middleware technologies like zOS Connect. As part of the development lifecycle, the candidate will work with business partners on gathering requirements, documenting user stories, develop code, and execute and support testing procedures that include, but are not limited to, unit testing, integration testing, quality assurance testing, create automated test scripts and end-user acceptance testing. The candidate will follow MetLife’s defined release management processes to deploy the code to various test and production regions and monitor post-deployment activities.

The candidate will also assist with the gathering and verification of non-functional requirements, review of architectural design changes, participate in structured walkthroughs and technical reviews, adherence to MetLife coding standards, and producing efficient, reusable code. 

MetLife uses an Agile approach to the software development lifecycle and the candidate will be expected to work in this manner in collaboration with local team members as well as onshore and offshore vendors participating in typical Agile delivery practices and ceremonies.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

 

Skills and Experience Needed:

  • 7+ years of hands-on mainframe application development experience working with COBOL, DB2, CICS, JCL, SQL, and VSAM.
  • Strong working knowledge of version and revision control tools like Git, CHANGEMAN.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and debug both online and batch using tools like IBM Debugger.
  • Experience in developing REST and SOAP APIs using technologies like zOS Connect and IDz.
  • Experience with mainframe DevOps, Scrum Framework, and SAFe Agile methodologies.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively and be able to work in an open, collaborative environment to support both individual and team objectives.
  • Experience working in an onshore-offshore model should be able to mentor, guide, and lead a small offshore team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • SAFe Certified.
