MetLife is seeking Sr Software Development Engineers to join our growing team in Raleigh, North Carolina. Our teams are building and enhancing software in support of MetLife’s leading U.S. based Insurance business. The Sr. Software Development Engineer oversees software development activities on one or more projects of moderate to high complexity.  In this role you will be responsible for the successful completion of technical deliverables (including detailed technical design), software development, unit testing process and ensuring quality standards are met by both onshore and offshore teams.   The Sr. Software Development Engineer participates in the technical design, development and implementation of application systems, and may have customer interaction. In this position you will have the opportunity to put your experience and education to work in an energetic and highly collaborative environment where diverse thought and experiences are valued.  You will be mentored by more senior team members and have the opportunity to serve as mentor for more junior team members helping them learn and grow.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Primary point of contact for all technical deliverables.
  • Ensure all tasks and milestones associated with technical design, development and unit testing are completed according to project management guidelines
  • Ensure development activities are aligned with scope, schedule, priority and business objectives
  • Review functional specifications, create detailed technical design and technical specifications, and oversee code development and unit and performance testing activities
  • Meet or exceed all operational readiness requirements (e.g., operations engineering, performance, risk management)
  • Interface with system designers to design, code, test, and implement application programs
  • Conduct analysis of organizational needs and goals for the development and implementation of application systems
  • Develop code, create test transactions and run tests to find errors and revise programs
  • Perform defect analysis and debugging of computer programs
  • Prepares change tickets and documentation for deployment procedures
  • Prepare operating procedures documentation and participate in knowledge transfer to Operations


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years related work experience
  • 5+ years programming in J2EE, Java, JSP, SOAP, Web Services, Java Script, HTML, and XML
  • 5+ years with SQL on relational DB’s such as Oracle and IBM UDB
  • 5+ years of experience using Rational Application Developer, JIRA, Maestro, or similar tools
  • 4+ years of experience using Spring, Hibernate and Junit
  • Strong software development skills using Java and web application technologies in SOA
  • Open Source Frameworks - Spring MVC, Spring Core.  XML, Integration with SOAP and RESTful WebServices, WS security
  • Versed in latest three tier best practices including data, rules and synchronous UI development
  • Experience and knowledge of client-side technologies including HTML 5, JavaScript, CSS3 , Ajax, JQuery, HTML5, and JSON


Preferred Experience:

  • Design experience using UML or USE CASE
  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture
  • Experience and knowledge of client-side technologies including HTML 5, JavaScript, CSS3 , Ajax, JQuery, HTML5, and JSON
  • Experience with IBM FilNet / IBM Enterprise Records (IER) / IBM Content Navigator (ICN)
  • Experience supporting Imaging and Workflow application
  • 2+ years of experience managing offshore software development with third party vendor
  • 2+ years of experience including architecture or leading technical design and/or development for a large scale distributed web application
