Senior System Administrator - AIX / Midrange

Role Value Proposition: 

This position is responsible for providing expert operational support for a broad range of MetLife’s critical midrange infrastructure including AIX, Solaris, Linux, AS400, and HP-UX systems in a 24x7 environment. In this role, you will be responsible for responding to and expediently troubleshooting incidents and problems as well as the implementation of changes and responding to all inquiries/requests related to the midrange infrastructure.  This is a 24x7 team and this role is first shift Monday to Friday and will provide out of hours support as needed.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, and Linux Server system administration, including installation and customization
  • Partner with and assist internal technology and business partners to provide RCA, support and solutions on complex problems and configurations; project management of multiple critical Distributed Systems infrastructure projects, coordinating the day-to-day tasks and appropriate resources assigned to those projects
  • Act as an internal consultant to achieve common goals in such areas as design review, performance tuning, problem trouble shooting, deployment planning, continued maintenance and analysis
  • Track complex system problems, using all available resources, (vendor support, online documentation)
  • Creation of LPARs including fully virtualized partitions and partially virtualized partitions; creation of partitions with vscsi, N-Port Virtualization(NPIV); perform Live Partition Mobility operations on pSeries LPAR
  • Perform installation, configuration, and upgrades on Advanced Power Virtualization VIO servers including Shared Ethernet Adapter(SEA) and redundant VIO servers
  • Provides 24x7 midrange systems (AIX/Solaris/AS400/Linux) administration, management, scripting, and operational support for over 2,500 servers


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • 8+ years of midrange server management, including OS installation, configuration, expert troubleshooting and tuning with knowledge of ITIL framework & key focus on AIX and Linux OS’
  • Ability to train and mentor team members including writing detailed documentation and instructions. This would include, for example, collaboration with Engineering and Vendor partners to develop such documentation
  • Must be proficient in the installation and configuration of HACMP clusters including includes Power HA and collaboration with ongoing upgrades, testing, and troubleshooting. 
  • Skilled with scripting in administrative languages such as Korn/Bourne/C Shell, Perl, ksh, Tk. and ability to leverage command scripting ability for vi files.



  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Certification / training on AIX, Linux, RHEL, etc.
  • Familiarity with SAN configurations, BCDR execution, network administration is preferred
  • Familiarity with Database Platforms : Sybase, Oracle, MySQL, DB2, Informix is preferred
