Role Value Proposition: 

The Regional Application Development (RAD) group within Global Technology is responsible for developing applications that service the needs of MetLife U.S. business and MetLife customers across the portfolio. The Director of Software Engineering Operations in RAD will play a critical part in envisioning, developing, and driving the continuous improvement initiatives that will further advance the Application Development function within the RAD US Organization at MetLife.  This role will be anchored in the software development processes, tools, metrics, and skills sets and will provide valuable insight to influence the strategic direction of the software engineering function of MetLife in the US. This is a key leadership role in the U.S. Software Development Technology organization and will work in close collaboration with other senior IT leaders. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts internal analysis on the effectiveness of the processes and tools used in the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC); identifies areas of improvement, creates recommendations, and drives the initiatives to advance the software development function.
  • Identifies the metrics that should be used to track the outcomes of the software engineering processes. Outcomes are strongly focused on software quality and time to market.
  • Completes benchmarking to assess technology best practices and leads evaluation of external Application Development trends to determine how these could affect the application portfolio at MetLife. Analyzes skillsets, tools, and practices being adopted by other global organizations and identifies relevant adoption and roadmap for MetLife.
  • Develops employee change management strategy to create awareness of strategic application development processes and initiatives, improve their adoption and achievement of their outcomes.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining the Software Development Communities of Practices that aim to increase collaboration and share of best practices among teams
  • Thought leader in the application development space; driving force in innovation across the RAD organization. Promotes alignment between senior leadership and the rest of the organization on the initiatives needed to drive continuous improvement
  • Sets high standards of performance for self and/or others; assumes responsibility for work objectives; initiates, focuses, and monitors the efforts of self and/or others toward the accomplishment goals; proactively takes action and goes beyond what is required.

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • 8+ years of experience in the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) with strong familiarity with SDLC processes, from technical design, to coding, testing, and implementation
  • Track record in collaborating with company technology experts to analyze, synthesize, and concisely recommend solutions or recommendation improvements
  • Significant experience in the financial services industry
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to coach and provide guidance to junior teammates
  • Strong discipline, organizational skills and time management
  • Ability to influence within and across the organization to drive initiatives and changes that adhere to and mature the software development organization goals and objectives
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, experience interacting effectively with senior leaders and creating senior level communication and presentations
  • Bachelor’s degree required with major in related discipline strongly preferred

Preferred:

  • MBA
  • 3+ years of consulting experience for a top tier consulting firm
