MetLife is seeking an IT Director of Data Architecture to join its centralized Enterprise Architecture team focused on delivering strategic architectural solutions that enable MetLife to meet its business goals. This Director will lead a senior team of Data Architects and will be a core member of the Digital Channels and Data Architecture team. The Director will be responsible for the day to day operations of the Data Architecture team, including project, resource, and personnel management, as well as technical oversight. The Director will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of conceptual and solution architecture designs across the Global Analytics and Data Services portfolio. In this position, the focus will primarily be on database, data quality, Big Data, and analytics platforms, supporting multiple global tenants. In this role, the Director will be responsible for the architecture of a cutting-edge Big Data platform, based on Hadoop, Hortonworks, and advanced analytics tooling. This position will also be involved with defining data platform architectures using cloud-based container infrastructure. The Director will ensure that all solution architectures and new technology acquisitions are delivered through MetLife’s architectural governance review processes and follow established enterprise reference architectures and standards. They will also collaborate with global IT partners in architecture and development to deliver future state architectures for the portfolios assigned.


The ideal candidate will have strong business and technology acumen in order to develop sound architecture solutions that will meet and exceed business needs, as well as experience managing senior technical teams in an Enterprise setting. Skills in Big Data and data science practices, along with the capacity to adapt to changing technology landscape are essential.  Effective communications with IT and Business associates at all levels including senior management will be required. This position may require some travel depending on current assignment, as well as working with global partners in time zones outside of the U.S.


Functional Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Architecture team from a technical and personnel management perspective

  • Manage the creation, analysis, and review of data-related solution architectures, and ensures their integrity, security, and strategic alignment

  • Leads multiple complex or large-scale projects as assigned

  • Leads the project planning of architecture activities and provides estimates for architecture work

  • Leads the development of Future State Architectures for a given portfolio

  • Maintains a broad, deep understanding of current business applications and technical platforms in the Global Analytics and Data Services portfolio

  • Maintains a broad, deep understanding of multiple industry technologies and reference architectures

  • Leads the development of horizontal solutions for projects / programs

  • Partners with application development teams in validating and implementing proposed solutions.

  • Partner with global partners in architecture and IT to ensure that global solutions accommodate local/regional requirements, including language support and data sovereignty restrictions

  • Prepares presentations tailored for various audiences (e.g., executive management, business partners, IT partners, etc.)

  • Ensures the completion of product assessments and vendor evaluations as needed, and guides these through the approved software governance processes

  • Ensures architecture standards (reference architectures / approved technology stacks) and best practices are adhered to

  • Has ability to maintain big picture focus while working on individual solution architectures

  • Proactively keeps management informed of project status, issues, and dependencies

  • Mentor and lead the professional development of team members


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of related architecture experience

  • 3 + years of hands on experience in software engineering/development

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or engineering discipline

  • Experience directly managing technical staff

  • Demonstrated proficiency in coaching and mentorship

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication proficiency

  • Demonstrated influencing and negotiating skills

  • Experienced at effectively interacting with associates at all levels

  • Proficient at working independently with minimal supervision while consistently meeting all expectations

  • Ability to lead and/or work simultaneously on multiple large, complex  projects

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more architecture disciplines (e.g., application architecture, data architecture, infrastructure architecture, integration architecture, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience in understanding, analyzing, applying, and communicating abstract architectural concepts

  • Proficient at working within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in a large enterprise

  • Broad knowledge of web application concepts, design patterns and technologies (e.g., Single Page Applications, microservices, etc.)

  • Broad knowledge of integration technologies and patterns such REST, ETL, MFT, SOA, MQ, etc.

  • Broad knowledge of Big Data concepts, design patterns and technologies (e.g., Hadoop, data streaming, etc.)

  • Broad knowledge of API Management, API Design and API security (OAuth, Basic Auth, etc.)

  • Experience with BI, Reporting, and Analytics.

  • Experience with the architecture and design of data-centric projects (e.g., data warehouse, data lake, data marts, etc.)

  • Extensive experience with information architecture, data integration, data management, and database technologies (e.g. RDBMS, NoSQL, Mongo, Hadoop, Hortonworks, etc.)

  • Experience with cloud concepts (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS, microservices, serverless) and major cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure or AWS

  • Experience with security architecture patterns and technologies (e.g., web access management, single sign on, federation, data encryption, etc.)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing a senior team of technical architects

  • Experience with Big Data Platforms, particularly Hortonworks, and usage in a large enterprise environment

  • Experience with Data Science, Machine Learning, and advanced analytics technologies, and usage in a large enterprise environment

  • Experience working with customers/partners outside of the US, including Asia and Latin America
