Role:  MetLife is the leading provider of Group Benefits.  The US Business Technology organization is a diverse team of Application Developers, Architects, Configuration Analysts, Business Systems Analysts, Project Managers & Program Managers, all working towards the common goal of ensuring the customer is at the center of everything we do.  As an Assistant Vice President in the US Business Technology organization, you will be responsible for leadership of Cloud Engineering and DevSecOps for the MetLife Group Insurance Platform, a strategic, modern platform initially focused on Small and Regional market business.  The MetLife Group Insurance Platform is a digital, Cloud Hosted, quote through claims platform servicing brokers, employers, employees, and back office MetLife users across all core and voluntary Group Insurance products.


Key Responsibilities:  

  • Develop the vision and strategy for a secure, scalable, and reliable cloud platform that supports Group Business.
  • Transform the organization to a DevSecOps delivery approach.  Drive the transition of existing vendor led DevSecOps to in house.
  • Evaluate current IBM Cloud hosting.  Develop a strategy to modernize and/or migrate to alternative Cloud providers including Azure.  Lead modernization/migration.
  • Lead Application Performance testing and platform scalability efforts.
  • Drive automation throughout the DevSecOps lifecycle.
  • Continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies and frameworks to maximize software development efficiency.
  • Partner with Product Management and engineering leaders to develop technical roadmap.
  • Execute the technical roadmap to produce easily consumable deliverables.
  • Bring technology and engineering acumen to partner with architects and principal engineers to find tactical and strategic solutions across engineering talent, SDLC and technology.
  • Partner with enterprise platform teams to identify and integrate APIs, frameworks, etc.
  • Equip engineering team with the necessary tools, information in enterprise system of record, environment management, CI/CD pipeline, integrations/APIs, release management and test data management and position them to deliver unmatched customer experiences in the industry.
  • Drive people leadership including talent, operations, employee engagement, resource (FTE or FTC) management and performance management.
  • Own budget and manage the financials for the portfolio of work.
  • Working with Agile teams, comprehend, analyze people, process or technology blockers and direct/action to resolve them. The role will own resolution of all barriers that impede the important work done by the teams.
  • Be an advisor, coach to the teams on Agile Delivery Model, SAFE/Agile practices.
  • Be proactive, own and resolve issues in risk, security, and security. Prevention to be the guiding principle.
  • Be data-driven and passionately drive evolution of metrics and collection/reporting of engineering metrics. Partnering with product manager, contribute to business metrics.
  • As a leader in US Technology, be an active participant on making the broader teams win.
  • Financial and operational responsibility to engage and manage software vendors.
  • Lead by example on customer centricity across multiple dimensions including during production incidents, Program Increment (PI) planning, discussing tradeoffs, prioritization, etc.
  • Drive architecture standards and guidelines for the MetLife Group Insurance platform.
  • Inspire engineering teams!


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • BS with advanced degree preferred in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical engineering.
  • Proven experience in product development (PD) delivering enterprise solutions to clients and consumers. PD constitutes leadership across people, technology and product.
  • Proven track record of success and significant experience in a fast-paced, leading software development initiatives, with working knowledge of modern database, services, UI and development tools.
  • Demonstrated strength managing and developing diverse direct and 3rd party engineering organizations. Prefer an individual with experience and proven ability to manage an organization of 60+ with ability to scale, including across geographies.
  • Proven track record of delivering successful world-class, large-scale, performance-critical multimillion-dollar software projects on time, on budget and with quality and security…all in support of large, growing, established businesses, as well as new businesses.
  • Experience in an agile/iterative, life cycle development processes and deriving best practices.
  • Experience in managing and executing complex system integration - effectively exercising build/buy/partner principles.
  • Experience in developing platform/application running on the leading cloud platforms.
  • Experience in cloud-first infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or IBM Cloud), as well as API and microservices architecture.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically with outstanding business acumen, who hits the sweet-spot of being strategic and "hands-on".
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results with a track record of success in achieving high-impact business results in a complex and multi-business-line work environment.
  • Experience in building a high performing organization… demonstrated open and frequent communications at all levels of the organization with a genuine sensitivity and commitment to the development needs of the organization.
  • Exhibits strong executive presence and is able to drive/steer conversations in technology and business forums.
  • Experience driving continuous improvement, exploring and implementing creative ideas to significantly improve performance of an organization.
  • Experience in positively affecting behavior of others to achieve high performance and personal satisfaction through a sense of purpose and spirit of collaboration.
  • Experience with Site Reliability, Quality, Security, and DevOps.
  • Experience collaborating with and presenting to VP, C-Level.
