The National Accounts Underwriting Department works closely with our NA Sales and Service Organizations in pursuing profitable growth for the Company.  We underwrite a broad range of group insurance products to provide an attractive benefits package for employees looking for financial protection.  The benefits we offer include Life, Dental, Vision, Disability, Total Absence Management, Accident, Hospital Indemnity, Critical Illness, Pet, HS&SA, and Legal Plan products and services.


The Role

You will serve as the lead financial officer associated with the Northeast 2 Customer Unit, as well as the Government Unit in National Accounts, providing financial and technical guidance for a significant portion of our National Accounts business (customers and prospects). The block of business has annual revenue in excess of $1.5 billion. Responsibilities include approving underwriting and pricing as well as making pricing decisions in direct negotiations with customers and their intermediaries and serving as the National Accounts liaison to the various financial and product units.  You will be managing the total customer experience that includes outcomes aimed at profitable growth including earnings, revenue, and expense management. You will also be providing risk evaluation and price setting ensuring overall profitability and revenue growth of the product or book of business.  Additionally, the role will be responsible for developing and analyzing financial reports which includes identification of regional and national trends which can be used by sales, service, finance, and underwriting to drive business results.


You will direct and lead a team responsible for underwriting functions in support of the NA Customer Unit and will have responsibility for hiring, firing, promotions, performance and compensation management, and training and development. 


Key Relationships:

  • Reports to: Vice President, National Accounts Underwriting
  • Reports: Team of eight National Account underwriters
  • Key Stakeholders: Sales, Product and Finance


Key Responsibilities:

  • Development and final approval of pricing for new business and renewals for the Federal Government Unit which includes the FEDVIP Dental and Vision plans, and Northeast 2 National Accounts prospects and customers.
  • Serve as the lead financial officer associated with the Northeast 2 customer unit and the Federal Government unit.  In addition to approving underwriting and pricing, duties include earnings analysis, recommendations for changes to enhance performance, the maintenance of financial discipline within the customer unit ensuring that all financial procedures and guidelines are followed, and functioning as the National Accounts liaison with the various financial and product areas. 
  • Directly negotiate profitable financial arrangements with customers, prospects, and their intermediaries.
  • Develop and train an underwriting staff to handle all aspects of renewal, new business, and revision pricing.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Strong skills required in the following areas: risk analysis; technical ability; relationship building; communication skills.
  • 10-15+ years of large group underwriting experience.
  • Strong record of success in leading business growth with P&L responsibility is preferred.
  • Able to operate effectively while managing multiple assignments in time sensitive environment.

Undergraduate degree required.  Actuarial designation or MBA degree preferred.
