Position:  Associate – MetLife Investment Management/Credit Analyst  


Job Location: Hong Kong


Department: The Asia Regional Credit Reaserch team of MetLife Investment Management provides fundamental credit research of Asia corporate issuers with investment recommendations to support Metlife’s general account local portfolios within the region and hard currency portfolio managers in the US for Metlife’s global general account portfolios and third party total return mandates.  


The Role: The analyst will play a pivotal role in providing fundamental credit opinions on existing and new issuers in the financial’s sector for the various portfolios under the guidance of the regional credit research lead and other senior credit analysts. As a primary analyst covering frontier and emerging Asian countries, the analyst will be involved in various high profile projects to support Metlife’s rapidly growing general account assests. The role requires organizational skills and exceptional team work in addition to solid credit skills to cover complex financial institution issuers and capital structures.  


Key Responsibilities:

  • The ability to deliver consistent high quality credit analysis and generating investment ideas in the new issue and secondary markets in order to outperform total return benchmarks and yield targets for insurance type mandates
  • Ongoing monitoring of market indicators, issuers’ financials and news to make timely and effective credit calls to support managing credit risks
  • Participating in various credit research discussions – new issue discussion, cross regional sector or issuer review discussions and regional asset allocation discussions for frontier and emerging Asian countries
  • Build broad sector and country knowledge by working on various portfolios
  • Coordidate team activities and actively participate in team projects, tasks


Key Relationships:

  • Reports to: VP, Global Financial Sector Lead
  • Direct reports/team: No direct reports, part of a regional team of six corporate credit analysts in Hong Kong and a global team of six financial sector analyts
  • Key Stakeholders: Regional Lead of Credit Research, Asia Public Fixed Income team, Global Research team, EM portfolio managers, Regional PMU team and local teams


Candidate Qualifications:

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 3-5 years of relevant credit analysis experience, preferably with international firm(s). Knowledge on Basel capital regime across the different countries and/or frontier financial insitutions a big plus.
  • Strong accounting and financial analysis skills and knowledge of/experience in financial models and quantitative analysis
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Good communication skills both in written and spoken English, other regional languages a plus
  • A self-motivated individual with a high degree of analytical orientation, intellectual curiosity and attention to detail; excellent decision making and problem solving skills
  • Strong teamwork-driven attitude and ability to work with people across the regions and at all levels of the organisation
  • Good education background, MBA and/or CFA desirable
