Role Value Proposition: 

This role will be a critical part of the newly formed Underwriting Strategy team within Regional Business. This team will interact directly with Local Market Finance, Sales, Regional Business Development & other internal partners for the identification, rollout and reporting of local market underwriting strategies and full oversight of strategic execution.


The Underwriting Consultant is responsible for evaluating key metrics at the local office level and creating strategies for new business growth and customer retention based on key metrics and identified market opportunities.  This person will conduct a detailed analysis to establish profitable and competitive rates and plans given the unique circumstances and needs of each group customer.


Key Responsibilities:  

  • Direct accountability for the development of underwriting and pricing strategies patterns across Regional Business Underwriting
  • Engage with Local Market Finance and Product Pricing teams to share local market understanding and positively influence rating methodology and localized pricing strategies for each of the twenty-four sales offices
  • Works proactively and collaboratively with internal and external partners to make sound decisions that will continue to build MetLife’s book of group insurance business. Proactively provides market-differentiating solutions to increase likelihood of success in a local sales office
  • Develop process and operation models within underwriting needed to support identified local market initiatives and strategies.  Provide documentation, training and reporting to support strategies.
  • Build effective working relationships within underwriting, sales management and sales personnel as well as the administrative operations in the Implementation and Service Units in order to effectively consult on strategic initiatives and address issues proactively


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Group underwriting experience
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, listening)
  • Strong presentation skills including buildout of presentation materials in Microsoft PowerPoint and effective public speaking.
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities. Ability to utilize market and process knowledge in a manner that increases the likelihood of success or differentiates MetLife versus that of the competition, particularly on complex quotes requiring a thorough analysis.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to drive change throughout the organization
  • Strong customer service skills. Consistently demonstrates outstanding partnership with internal partners.  Ability to communicate directly with customers and/or third parties in order to arrive at solutions.
  • High level of organizational skill and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Team player: works well with other underwriters and business partners.
  • Ability to grasp market and industry trends and proactively incorporate those aspects into the decision-making process.



·         5+ years of group underwriting experience.

·         Strong knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures, underwriting guidelines and philosophies. 

·         College degree in Math, Business, Finance, or the Financial Services industry.

·         Advanced degree is a plus.
