This position is for a Corporate Counsel in the Litigation Section of Legal Affairs to support MetLife’s group employee benefits business, including disability, life and long-term care.  The candidate must be able to provide excellent legal advice and representation, have demonstrated a high degree of discretion and judgment, have the intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of the changing legal climate on issues relevant to a global provider of income and protection products and services, and have a strong commitment to personal growth, demonstrating leadership and developing talent.  As in-house litigation counsel to the group benefits claims operation we provide value by protecting the enterprise and partnering to develop solutions to avoid risk.


Key Responsibilities:  


  • Evaluate facts and law to advise business clients regarding litigation and pre-litigation risks, strategy and resolution;
  • Handle a high volume case load of group employee benefit litigations, most regulated by ERISA;
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and business practices which will mitigate risk and better protect the company with respect to MetLife’s claim operations, including develop and present training to business partners;
  • Manage e-discovery obligations, including legal holds and document collections
  • Manage outside counsel, including budgeting, reviewing outside counsel invoices and actively managing strategy and negotiation


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • JD degree from accredited law school, admission to New York and federal bar, excellent academic credentials and at least 4-6 years of litigation experience reflecting a record of accomplishment.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated record of attention to detail, sense of urgency, ability to handle substantial workload effectively (i.e., establish priorities, adhere to deadlines0
  • Ability to thrive as a team member and individual contributor in a high-performance culture and ability and commitment to develop leadership skills.
  • Experience litigating ERISA benefits cases is strongly preferred.  Experience litigating state law, bad faith insurance cases is also preferred.
