Senior Principal Engineer- US Digital

The Role: MetLife is seeking a Sr. Principal Engineer to support the growing focus of US Business and our ambitious strategy to create engaging digital experiences for our customer, which will generate strong and enduring relationships aligned with the MetLife brand.  As a member US Digital leadership team, you will co-own and drive the technology charter for US Digital Strategy focused on people, process, and technology. This could also entail sharing the technology leadership responsibility with other senior engineers to cover the broader programs that includes multiple products.


Key Responsibilities:

  • As the senior technical leader for assigned product/s, lead the technology and engineering vision and work with the rest of the engineering team to drive for outcomes.
  • As a member of US Digital Leadership, collaborate, own and drive technology initiatives that progress the overall engineering foundation along people, process, and tech dimensions.
  • Drive technology-based engagement and servicing capabilities for our customers.
  • Drive architecture selection, software design, execution, and operations at the solution level, enabling the business to operationalize the day-to-day functions of the Application/Platform.
  • Identify appropriate technology stacks in accordance with Enterprise standards and incorporate them into sound technical designs.
  • Oversee the efforts of team members in terms of writing, testing, deploying, and maintaining high quality code.
  • Interview and select talent with contemporary Technology skills. Identify evolving needs for additional talent and establish a process for recruitment to keep pace with increasing investment levels.
  • Design and implement robust CI/CD solutions to enable Agile SDLC within a DevOps context with a focus on scalability and increased pace of delivery.
  • Partner with technology partners in the enterprise to deliver the engineering outcomes.
  • Identifies and implements operating efficiency solutions for a complex product portfolio or solution.
  • Influence business with emerging technology trends and capabilities aligned to the solution portfolio.
  • Mentor and inspire engineers by leading by example in areas such as problem solving, estimation, tools & methodologies, and best practices.
  • Institute and drive forums that help with multiplication of talent and skills.


Candidate Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related area, or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years of experience developing systems/software for large scale technology operations.
  • 8+ years of experience designing complex distributed systems, management products or business applications.
  • 10+ years leading cross functional project teams.
  • Thorough with computer science fundamentals in data structure, problem solving, algorithms and complexity analysis.
  • Proficiency in software engineering principles and engineering at scale.
  • Ability to build, deliver and operate complex, cloud-based systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages – Java, C#, Python or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in one or more of web languages such as JS, Typescript, Dart or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the backend runtime: Java Spring or Spring Boot, .NET Framework or Core, NodeJS or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in modern web framework such as ReactJS, AngularJS, ViewJS or equivalent
  • Experience with structured and unstructured data and databases.
  • Strong experience with engineering native mobile and web applications.
  • Skilled in software development lifecycle processes. Experience with SCRUM, Agile and iterative approaches a plus.
  • Able to operate at highly varying levels of abstraction from business strategy to product strategy to high level technical design to detailed technical design to implementation.
  • Synthesize achievable solutions from diverse inputs, alternative sources (build / buy / partner) and complex data.
  • Experience with frameworks like Struts, Spring, Hibernate, JSF a plus.
  • Experience with structured and unstructured data and databases.

Prior working experience in financial services and/or cloud computing domain highly desired.

  • Provide/inspire innovations that fuel the growth of MetLife as a whole.
  • Apply your experience and innovation to generate creative ideas for emerging business needs
  • Coach and mentor other engineers in process and methodologies.
  • Provide perspective on leading industry trends, recommendations on new and emerging technologies, technology prototypes, patent proposals and engineering process improvements.
