Role Value Proposition:


The Company is seeking an attorney to join the Brighthouse Legal Department to work on investment matters for the Company’s $80+ billion general account.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Reviewing and negotiating agreements, including private equity, private funds, private debt or mortgages, and derivatives holdings;
  • Researching and advising on applicable laws and regulations and requirements under deal documents;
  • Responding to questions from the Investments Department, Finance Department, Compliance Departments and Risk Department about investment limitations, contractual arrangements and legal requirements
  • Interacting as needed with third-party investment managers and service providers about investment guidelines and deal documents.
  • Conducting legal research and preparing memoranda and reports for insurance entity boards; and
  • Working with outside counsel, as may be needed, on matters pertaining to general account investments and contracts.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • Juris doctorate from an accredited law school; admitted to practice before a state bar association, preferably New Jersey or New York or ability to register as in-house counsel in New Jersey or New York;
  • 2-7 years of investments law experience, either with a law firm or in-house;
  • Experience negotiating investment documents and service contracts;
  • Experience with insurance laws and regulations;
  • Experience interacting with internal clients and managing or escalating questions or issues as appropriate;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with insurance company investment transactions, derivatives, private equity and other alternative investments;
  • Prior experience with presentation to boards; and
  • Prior experience interacting with Compliance, Risk, Investments and Finance professionals.
